How lucky am I !!!???

Phew.... just had a scary moment !!

My girlfriends brother gave their mum his old 6680 as I convinced him to go the same way as me and get an N73. So this morning, she's putting all her contacts, etc in and I suggest that I do a firmware upgrade. I backed everything up, fired up NSS, changed the product code, started NSU and did the upgrade. No problems there at all, until I tried accessing the menu. Everytime I pressed the menu button, it just stayed at the standby screen :con?

So, I thought I'd re-install the firmware, just in case. So I started the process off again. Whilst this was going, I thought I'd print off the user manual so she had something to reference if she had a problem. I started the print job and got a paper jam error on my laser printer. As I pulled the paper tray out and moved the printer over, I must have accidentally pressed the reset button on my PC because when I looked at the monitor everything was shutting down !!! AAARGGGHHHH !!!

I looked at the phone and it was blank. I tried powering it up and nothing. Completely "bricked" as they say 😮 😮 😮

I started cursing everything under the sun and started my PC back up again. The phone was completely dead and nothing would bring it back to life. Once the PC had rebooted, I started NSU again and to my utter astonishment, it found the dead 6680 and offered to re-install the firmware. I clicked OK and away it went, and 5 minutes later, the 6680 was breathing again, full of life !!!!

Trust me, no one is more amazed (and relieved) than me !! I had visions of having to surrender my own 6680 to my mother in law and really upsetting my girlfriend who was supposed to have it. At least now I can keep both of them happy, which is no mean feat, I can tell you !

The moral of this story is; when upgrading your firmware, keep well away from everything and don't touch a bloody thing until it's done !! 😊

In fact, I would go as far to say that you probably shouldn't do upgrades on desktops. At least a laptop keeps going if there is a power cut, unless you use a UPS 😊

Anyway, I'm off to make the most of this relief !! LOL 😉

And the moral of this story?

Serves you right for having a girlfriend as well as a (wife's) mother in law.

Seriously - glad you got it sorted, you lucky boy.

I've got a 6680 as well, and it must be some sort of record for me, as I've had it nearly nine months yet, and not even ONE thought of getting rid of it - it rocks!

LOL ! I call her my mother in law purely for convenience sake ! She's my girlfriends mum but my and the g/f have been together so long we might as well be married !

Yes, the 6680 is a great phone and it served me well for almost 2 years, but the need for greater things was too tempting and the N73 is superb. After using it for a few days, the 6680 looked quite old and dated, but the g/f is well chuffed she is getting it. She normally has my cast offs and I gave her my 6600 when I got the 6680. Somehow though, she managed to screw the 6600 up so she had to revert to using one of my old 7650's ! Funnily enough though, I have since managed to get the 6600 working again but she fancies the 6680 so that will be hers once I get the network lock removed by Vodafone.

So you rate the N73 then? I did try to get hold of it when my contract was due for an ugrade in August / Sept time, but as I'm with O2 Online, they were asking silly money for that particular handset.

Because I'd struck a deal with two years ago, my monhtly line rental is only 20, and they base their upgrade fee on how much I spend every month!

Another reason I wasn't too gutted, was that I run TomTom 5 on my 6680, and was told that would not work with the N73, but I'm sure I read ( on here, I think ) that Tom TOm 6 is out and works with the N73 now.

Anyway, enough drivel.

Yeah, the N73 is a top handset. I was initially after an N80 but I wanted to go on to Orange so I could get my Broadband discounted. Orange told me they stopped doing the N80 as it had so many problems but if you ask me, that's probably down to their crappy branded version of the firmware. Anyway, I spent a bit of time playing with the N73 and found it to be really good. I got it on the Racoon deal with 500 anytime/any network minutes, 200 texts and permanent unlimited landline calls for 35 per month and my Broadband (8Mbps, free Livebox and VoIP service with free landline and international calls) for 5 per month ! I could hardly say no !

Since I upgraded to ME, it's been perfect in almost every way.

As for TomTom, you are right when you say that TTM5 doesn't work on the N73. No Series60 v2 software works on Series60 v3. TomTom Navigator 6 is the new kid on the block, although TomTom say it's not available on the N73, but it is for the N80. I have it and it works just fine. In fact, it's a huge improvement over TTM5, but that could be down to a faster processor and more memory. It's visually better too.

When you say you have it - can I just clarify?

You have the N80 version running on your N73? And this is TT6? I take it from your description, TT6 is Series 60 v3 as opposed to TT5 being v2? How much is TT6 - if you don't mind me asking?

I bought my TT5 off Ebay for about 3, then all I had to get was GPS Receiver!

In what ways is it better - any examples? I thought TT5 was pretty slick TBH?

Thanks for the info.

Yup, I bought the S60 v3 version of TTN6 for 120 on DVD from TomTom. TTN6 is not available for S60 v2. I'm sure you could probably find it cheaper elsewhere. They also do a version on a MiniSD but it has fewer maps.

IMHO, TTN6 is cosmetically nicer, and it appears to be smoother and less prone to crashing, although that might be down to the improved specs of the phone. It has things like over speed indicators and time of arrival settings plus the navigation menu is much nicer to work with.

Check out the review in the reviews section of this site 😊

Yeah, after seeing your post yesterday, I went onto TT's web site and had alook for TTN6, and was plased to see that they are now sellin git in a variety of formats - on dvd, on memory card, on dvd AND memory card, dvd+memory card AND a gps receiver etc etc.

But, I'll stick with my TTN5 for now, it works well enough for me, its re-assuring that when I do get rid of my N6680 for a N73m I can get a version of TT that works!

Thanks again. This is been a kind of one to one conversation!

No worries 😊
