No, you don't need to get it unlocked, unless you want to of course 😊
Firstly, you need to find the correct product code for the ME edition in your part of the world. There is a sticky post at the top of this forum with a big list.
You then need to get hold of Nemesis Service Suite (NSS) which will allow you to change the product code of your phone to the ME product code.
You then need to download the Nokia Software Updater (NSU) from the Nokia site and perform an update. This will recognise the ME product code you have just written into your handset and upgrade the firmware accordingly.
All of these procedures are done at your own risk and you should be advised that it may invalidate your warranty or contravene the terms of your contract. There is also a risk of "bricking" (killing) your phone if the process goes wrong, i.e. you shut your PC down or disconnect the phone during the upgrade.
However, I, and many others, have successfully upgraded their N73's and are benefitting from the extra stability and features it provides 😊
thanks for that , i shall give all off those a go, but what i cant see is a ME or Internet version for the UK, is there one?

The Internet Edition is currently only available in Hong Kong/China & Taiwan.
The Music Edition did appear on the UK Nokia site but has since gone :con?
Either way, the firmware exists.
ok, so I change the product code to that of one of another country (english speaking i guess), then run the NSU ,it will see it as Nokia ME/Internet version and then it will firmware update?, what if i need to back track to voda settings?
cheers

Choose the EURO1 product ID. That's the one for the UK. I used 0537289.
You can return your product ID to the original after upgrading (if you forget it, it's on the silver sticker underneath the battery), but remember to change it back whenever you want to do another update.
As for regressing the firmware, AFAIK, it can't be done.
so i cant take a firmware image before upgrading to ME/Internet? will i lose all my voda settings, wap, sms, mms etc

No.

Yes, but you can backup those to the memory card or re-enter them manually.
I searched the discussions about the internet edition N73. I used NSS to change the product code to the N73IE, but now NSU is not recognizing my phone at all. PC Suite is though. I know it is not the NSU software, because I plugged in my untouched N73 into the PC and the NSU recognized the device.
Any tips?
well i did the firm ware upgrade on my voda n73 to ME edition, and everything went well, i restarted the phone and all was good, then i did a restore using Nokia Suite and the phone crashed and it refused to boot up properly, kept coming up with " failed to start, contact retailer", I thought crap i've bricked the phone.
did some research last night till 1 a.m. and found someone else posting on how to do a hard rest, so i did that and the phones been good as gold since.
to hard reset :Make sure you hold *, 3 and green simultaneously as you turn the phone on (and keep holding) - don't press the keys one at a time.
