I mean 3.0633.09.04
20-11-06
RM-89

I have been checking the WLAN, which seems to work with my Zyxel router without having to disable power saving. As this was the biggest problem I had with the E61, I am happy with the upgrade so far.

great, I will try later. Do you have access to a URL or text file with a list of the updates ?

thx

V3.0633.09.04 phone seems more responsive but yet to see if the 'not enough memory to receive message' thing whilst roaming still occurs.

After updating the phone I experienced problems with the blackberry service (version 6.40.0 10), saying that the "version is not authorized".

The very same version worked fine with the previous rom. Is there any new blackberry version for s60 3rd compatible with the newly issued rom?

1. my phone says it is up to date. will wait to later, hope it changes.

2. The bb thing worries me, as I use it. I know that the current bb connect asks you if you have a v1 or v2 ROM as they are difference clients. Perhaps we need a v3 client.

anyone in UK or europe updated e61 to v3 ?
mine says that no update is available. wondered whether it was US only at this point ?

I'm from Romania and I successfuly updated my phone to firmware 3.0633.09.04 around 7pm GMT. So far so good, in the previous firmware I had connection time-outs when using wifi, but now they seem to have gone. In addition the phone looks more responsive. Haven't tested voip connectivity yet.

Glad that you guys agree with me that the new software rocks!! I had not even a single crash so far after 3 weeks use (Since I posted the existence of v3.x).

This is the best and probably the "last" software update....

It is very unlikely to be the last firmware as Nokia says on in the E61 FAQ that: "Our current plan is to build support for the most common methods for NAT traversal, called STUN, TURN and ICE. STUN support is expected to become available during 2006, and TURN and ICE during 2007." Therefore, there will have to be further firmware updates.

Although the WLAN has improved with my Zyxel router as there are no timeouts, web browsing seems to become very slow after a while and disabling power saving still seems to improve WLAN performance.

With VoIP, I still cannot get Plustalk from Plus.net to work and Sipgate still works so no real change although the VoIP software has been improved.

Upgraded my SIM free E61 (bought in the UK but a spanish model apparently judging from the keyboard layout).

Once again, the upgrade itself went fine but once again the restoring process afterwards has been a disaster. Once again, restoring the phone memory from the memory card failed half way through without telling me what had been restored and what had not. As it turns out, all my contacts, calendar entries, notes and access points have been restored fine but only a few applications have been restored. A good number of applications have simply vanished. Once again, an "Installing" message (installing what for christ sake!) showed up everytime i was starting my phone and stayed there for 5 minutes preventing me from being able to use the phone until eventually failing with an "Unable to install" error. Once again, dozens of applications that used to be installed on my memory card were now marked as "Not Installed" in the application manager. Once again, i had to spend half an hour re-installing each one of them manually from the app manager. Once again, a dozen of them failed to reinstall with very usesful error messages such as "Failed to install". Once again, i had to connect my phone to my PC in data transfer mode then manually track down and delete the files of those applications so that this bloody "Installing" message stopped poping up whenever the phone was restarted. A new one this time: all the commercial applications that i bought and survided the firmware upgrade now have to be re-registered (at least, the last time i didn't have to do that). Once again, this firmware upgrade has been a complete mess. Once again, i've had to spend hours to get my phone back up and running as it was before. Once again, i'm telling myself that i'll never upgrade this bloody firmware again and once again i know that i'll jump on firmware v4 as soon as it'll be out.

So was it worth it? Depends.

The good things:
- The bass muted bug in music player introduced in firmware v2 has gone. So we're now back to where we were with the first firmware. Great. At least, i'll now be able to see whether the E61 is any good as a music player.
- That's it for the good things
- EDIT: one new feature that's nice: a small pop up windows appears at the top right corner of the screen whenever you copy text or establish a network connection. Nice touch and non-invasive too, it doesn't get on your way.

The bad things:
- Music Player still doesn't recognize the tags of AAC files (at least created by iTunes) placing them all under Unknown Artist / Unknown Album
- There is still a loud pop every now and then when starting to play a file in music player
- There seems to have been a brand new bug introduced in Music Player (looks like music player gets its new bug at each firmware upgrade). When updating the music library, the "Updating library" window stays there forever. Clicking cancel doesn't do anything. So i sent music player to the background and it crashed after a few seconds. After that, doing anything with the phone causes it to freeze completely and the phone has to be restarted. Love it. I can reproduce the problem everytime.
- The numeric shortcut bug introduced in firmware v2 hasn't been fixed. You still have to press and hold the blue key to be able to use the shortcuts even in the built-in applications, even in the phone's menu itself.
- It seems that the "Not enough memory to receive messages" bug is still there. I haven't seen the message but when i woke up this morning, there was a blinking enveloppe icon on the screen which disapeared after having restarted the phone. This is symptomatiic of this bug. I probably dismissed the message without seeing it when i switched off my alarm.
EDIT: i can confirm that this bug is definitely still there. In dublin at the moment with my virgin uk sim and sure enough, the message poped up.
- several people have reported an improvement in performances and responsivness with the new firmware. I haven't noticed any significant improvements myself. The folders in the menu maybe open a bit faster than before. That is, it now doesn't take ages to open a folder in the menu anymore, it only takes almost ages. This might be seen as an improvement. In any case, Messaging isn't any faster.

So that was my first impression with firmware v3. Not impressed to say the least.

I am in the midst of updating my UK phone from v1.0 to 3.0 (bought online in Canada, running a Rogers SIM card). I am stunned that it finally recognized my phone, because I've had the "no update available" message for the last 3 months on v1.0!

Now the bad news: the updater has crashed (a nokia update module is cooked and the updater is stuck, but I can't disconnect ). This is apparently a common problem. Phone screen is stuck in "Test Mode". I'll do a physical disconnect and see if the phone is fried. If it is it goes in the trash, I'm fed up.

Frankly I'm pretty tired of this nonsense. I have ordered a Blackberry and am going back to that platform that I never should have left! Fewer bells & whistles but the ones it has actually work, and when I turn it ON it is instant rather than the 3 minutes it takes to boot these extremely sluggish Series 3 units.

So I pulled the plug in the midst of my (crashed) update and the phone recovered. Interestingly though, the firmware that was applied is v2, not the latest 3. At least I can restore the phone now, so I can dump it on eBay!

good to hear that your recovered.

actually I have just left blackberry. I agree that for straight text email the bb service is rock solid.

but the web browser is rubbish, the menu system is not intuitive, the system is just plain slow (perhaps not for starting up, but for opening apps) and there is no software.

+ the voip works great on the E61 and truphone give me free international calls until Mar 07.

I have v2 in my nokia e61 and I am trying to sell my bb on ebay 😊

Fancy a 7100x !!!

I had the same problem with iTunes MP3 files. It seems that Music Player couldn't work out ID3 v2.4 tags, but I'm please to say all is now well after converting the tags to v1.1. To convert tags for your whole library: select all tracks in iTunes, right click and choose 'Convert ID3 tags', and change 'ID3 tag vesrion:' to 'v1.1' using the pull-down menu. This is on a Mac, but I imagine it's much the same on a Windows machine. It worked for me but you might want to try it with just one or two tracks before you do your whole library (it takes a while!)

I've never seen this, including with v3.0633.09.04 firmware.

With all pages or just some? If you could post the URL of a problem page I'll see if it's the same with my v3 firmware. Perhaps someone with v2 or v1 could have a look at it too. I haven't noticed any differences between Web in v1 and Web in v3 except that the menu item 'Window' is always present. Seems to render just the same (best of any mobile browser I've seen) and I certainly still have a cursor! The fact that you've lost your cursor might suggest something is seriously screwed with your installation... that or you're using the 'Services' browser rather than 'Web' by mistake 😊

I have cooled down and will keep the 61 now, having finally managed to update the firmware from 1.x to 3.x thanks to that Nemesis utility!

I agree the BB has its limitations but I do like its general simplicity. I actually don't use a data plan anymore which is why I originally opted for the wifi E61. You're right about the BB browser -- hopeless. Anyway, I found a cheap 8700 unlocked on eBay so will keep it as a 2nd phone for my other SIM chip!

hey marco,

good news.. i upgrade again my e61 for the third times.. but this time i taken out the miniSD.. and even the upgrade went wrong (as usual).. but this time.. my WEB working perfectly.. i can rendered any page now.. can access any webpage.. no hang.. no auto exit.. no crash.. wow... this is funny eh? i really don understand why its happened.. but now.. seem my E61 working perfectly.. much more faster.. need to figure it out what exactly happened... mmmmm

anyone in malaysia having this type of problem??? 😊

Hey, good news indeed! Now I think about it I do remember installation activity when it first booted after the upgrade and there was some message about not being able to install something from the card so perhaps that's where things went wrong with your previous installs, although if you got errors during the actual firmware update, I guess that still has to be the prime suspect. The change log for 3.0633.09.04 actually says 'Applications Auto installation from memory card improved' 🙄
