Major N80 issues and feeling extremely alone

I've been chasing Orange about the problems I'm having with my N80 to no avail, I either don't get called back, or when I do I'm told it'll be resolved soon.

OK - starting at the beginning. My main issue with this phone is that it takes an age (between 4 and 5 minutes) to send a text message, the entire phone freezes up meaning I can do nothing until it unfreezes and the SMS goes. I went into an Orange shop who said it was a known problem and that if I called 150 on my handset they'd arrange for a replacement, so I called Orange about this and was told they'd never heard of the problem and would pass it onto their technical department who would call me back. I got no call back for nearly 2 weeks, then a man called and said it was a software issue and that Nokia hadn't yet issued the software upgrade to resolve it but that it was expected within a month. So I started calling them again nearly 2 weeks ago. I spoke to a woman called Sandra who promised me she'd get to the bottom of this and call me back the next morning ... I heard nothing. So today I managed to get them again, called and was put through to a technical advisor who informed me that it was a problem with the software caused by a conflict between the N80 software and the software Orange loaded onto it, he said that they'd had to persue Nokia for a fix for this problem but that now Nokia wouldn't release it to Orange and I had to get the software upgraded myself, as it's a Nokia software issue there is nothing Orange can do to help me ... goodbye. I was given 3 options ...

1) go onto the Nokia website and download the software upgrade - I tried this, I have Nokia datasuite (upgraded version today) and my N80 is connected to it and interacts with it - I backed up as instructed, but when the upgrade installer comes to try and locate the connected phone it said it couldn't find it ... I selected PC Suite option when I connected the phone to the USB cable ... but from the message on the updater it reads that if I've done that and the phone is connected then the updater doesn't support my phone model.
2) go to Carphone Warehouse who have laptops, leads etc and can do the upgrade for me - I went into Carphone Warehouse who said no they couldn't, it'd have to be sent away.
3) download the software upgrade via my phone ... I've been to the Nokia website but just can't find out how to download the software upgrade directly to the phone.

So what do I do? I can't really expect Carphone Warehouse to send it away for me, I didn't even buy it from them, I got it directly from Orange online. I simply can't get the software to update via the PC, I can't find a link or software upgrade option on my phone and Orange have washed their hands of me.

I'm so close to flinging this phone through the window it's unbelieveable!!

Please - can anyone offer me some help and advice?

you should be able to download the latest firmware upgrade from the nokia web site via the software upgrade software. I am on orange and did it this way without any problems....try it again taking your time see what happens.

😞 I have tried it about 4 or 5 times today - the installer tells me the phone isn't connected 😞

To solve the immediate issue - (SMS delay) Nokia have released a software patch that you can download from the N80 support pages here.

They recommend that this software patch is installed regardless of the firmware version you run.

As far as the firmware upgrade goes follow the advice above is sound.

As for Orange... In nearly 12 years of using mobile phones across all the major UK networks I have yet to find a network where the "Technical Support" have a clue about what they are selling. I've come to accept that I will always know more than them (I research the phones carefully before buying and keep up to date on technology as part of my job), thanks mainly to forums like this one and some careful Googling. The easiest way I've found to deal with customer services is to keep going through the motions until you get the name of someone who is at least competent. This can take some time 🙄, but can give you a regular contact there. I usual try and keep the names of any call troubleshooters and ask for them on calling.

I have my current network provider (not Orange) fairly well trained - they've had to pay me 3 lots of compensation in the past 2 years over various screwups and there are notes on my file to that effect. When dealing with an issue now I get a name and ask them to read through my file notes before continuing the discussion. This tends to help things go my way somewhat 😊, although sometimes there are raised voices...😡

Thank you everyone!! The accelerator has indeed solved the problem 😃 wow - I can't believe it was so damned simple!!!

I am going to a Nokia shop I've been told about in Dundee when they open and get them to do the software upgrade.

Sounds like you have it tough over there. In this part of the world, I just go into a Nokia Care Center and they'll have the firmware updated in under two hours. And its free as long as the phone is under warranty.
