N80 T-mobile data charges?????

10 replies · 3,500 views · Started 24 December 2006

This is my first time here so go easy on me.

Just bought an n80 unlocked, been using it for a month or so, just got my bill through since switching to this phone & from an average of 30, my bill was just under 100, all apparently from data charges??

Since getting the phone i've been using the wifi at home to connect to my own wireless network as ur pc does so why am i getting ripped off?

I spoke to the T-Mobile customer service reps 3 times & none of them could give me an answer as to why my bills so much as they don't have the n80 on T-Mobile.

Am i doing something wrong or is there a way i can turn off some sort of setting?

Somebody help please!!!!:con? :con?

Im from New York so here we have tzones for 2.99, in the uk you should be able to have a 5.99 pound plan Web n Walk for unlimited charges. Use gprs for lower cost and use the opera mini for lower data downloads. The safari browser on the n80 shows full website, opera uses dumb downed versions.

Check the following:-

Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Connections -> Packet Data ->

There's 2 things you need set here.

1. Packet Data Conn. = When Needed
2. Access Point = general.t-mobile.uk

I had this setting for 6 months (before joining t-Mobile's Web&Walk) and never received any unexpected data charges. Hope this info helps? Merry Xmas!

P.S. It's also possible one of your apps is using another network's AP, so delete any Connections which are not T-Mobile ones. The previous owner of the handset may have configured Web Browser to user their own Network (e.g. Vodafone Live, etc). As long as the connection settings are correct for a given AP you can access it from any mobile network SIM CARD, but obviously it's more expensive if the AP does not belong to your home network, as you would be effectively Roaming

Ive done what you've recommended but theres one connection i can't delete which is the orange connection which seems to be locked to the phone.

One other thing is it free or not to use the wifi on the phone to connect to my home network?

And also the signal bar keeps flashing from the normal signal to 3g, does this mean that the phones connecting to the net:con? ?

Wifi is free pretty much everywhere except if its a hotspot and you would have to pay for it, but those are locked. THe 3g question i wouldnt have an answer to because tmobile in the states doesnt support it.

The 3G indicator is probably changing because there are either no 3G towers in the area or the signal is too weak so the phone falls back to 2G.

Hi,

1. You could edit the Orange Connection and delete the AP settings, username, password, etc. therefore it would not be able to make a connection (and therefore not transfer any chargeable data). However, doing this would most likely disable some Orange functionality - depends whether or not that bothers you.

2. Yes, WiFi connection at home would be free, but if one of the GPRS connections is always active it could still be sending and receiving data, even when you are using WiFi. Therefore data charges could still apply (for the GPRS data). When GPRS/3G Data-connection is active, you see 2 solid horizontal lines/arrows below the signal meter. If you can you see this, you may be liable to network data charges?

3. It sounds like you may be in an area of weak 3G coverage, and the handset is repeatedly changing from a 2G to a 3G cell and vice versa. Also, I find when you have no signal at all, the signal meter shows no bars but ALSO the 3G logo. If you don't make many Video Calls, you could try disabling 3G altogether. Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Phone -> Network -> Network Mode -> GSM

Hope this info helps.

I've tried to edit the orange access point it won't let me it says protected settings but i deleted the others (T-Mobile GPRS & T-Mobile MMS) in hope it would stop connecting on its own but its still doing it through orange even though im on T-Mobile:con? .

Every 30 mins or so i check the log & its still connecting to orange internet packet data, but its not sending or recieving anything because on the duration of the data call it says 1 second so at a guess its just connecting then disconnecting or trying to connect:con?

If i switch to network GSM is it going to affect me using the phone in any way as in getting good recieption etc?

And will it stop my phone connecting by itself as i dont use video calling it should make no difference to me?

And also can i still use the wifi?

Gprs will still work even if you switch to GSM mode, but you won't be able to make or receive video calls.

Finally figured out the problem.

Basically Orange have their own photo application on the n80 that after taking a photo offers to upload your picture to an online photo album causing your phone to connect to the web browser whenever it feels necessary, so i just went into the options of the application & turned the the damn thing off, simple eh???

If only i knew this a month ago id be 70 up. Oh well i guess shit happens & u gotta learn the hard way.

Anyway thanks for all your help people much appreciated.:icon14: 😊

I guess you need to Flash the Firmware to a Generic (non Orange) version to stop this intermittent GPRS data connection. You can do this safely using Phoenix 2006 or at one of the more friendly Nokia Care Centres. If you know any forum users living nearby who already have Phoenix installed , then perhaps they would do the job for you. I am in SE Scotland.

Switching to GSM mode will probably result in the same or even better reception, particularly indoors. Try it and if you don't like the result you can easily switch back to Dual Mode. In any event WiFi still works no matter what mode your network reception is set to.

One last thing you could try is clearing the Packet Data settings...
Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> Packet Data -> blank the AP name
This may stop the unwanted data connections but it may also prevent things like WEB, EMAIL and MMS from working properly. You won't know until you try.
(Finally, the Packet Data AP should always match your GPRS Web AP name if there's anything set for Packet Data).
