SIP and wifi

hello folks!

The new firmware is great, isn't it? I managed to stay connected at FWD and Gizmo at the same time with my E61, and it works beautifully!

I have this problem, however: I have two wi-fi hotspots that I use: "home" and "office". I want to keep connected to my voip providers whenever at the reach of those hotspots, but I don't want it to be connected via GPRS nor EDGE, as those are costly.

The SIP default access point settings doesn't allow me to select an access point group, but just a default access point.

My questions are:

1 - when I am the reach of the "office" hotspot, will I get automatically registered to my SIP providers?

2 - when I have no WiFi coverage, will it try to use GPRS? If so, is there a way to prevent it from doing that?

Cheers,

oculos

This is a little bit of a work around but what you need to do is create two SIP profiles. Call one FWD - Home and the other FWD - Office, or something equally as descriptive. Then in the home SIP profile define your home access point and in the "office" SIP profile define the office access point. In each SIP profile set Registration to "Always". Then your phone will automatically register as soon as it comes into range of either access point.

Oh, boy, this is not the best solution, as whenever I join a public wifi hotspot I'll have to create a new profile or change an existing one... it would be cool if it all happened automatically...

But the good side is that at least it won't connect to GPRS and getting be a big phone bill without me even knowing it...

Before, the internet phone application would allow me to change which was the prefered service for dialing out, and now it doesn't.

I have two profiles: Gizmo and FWD. When I click on the internet tel app, it tells me: "Already connected to Gizmo and FWD". Then, later, it says: "Disconnect from Gizmo?" if I choose Ok, it disconnects, and asks "Disconnect from FWD?" and, again, disconnects. Before, I could see my accesss point and, clicking on it, could change between gizmo and fwd for dialing out. Any clue?

Cheers,

I have an E60 and am therefore still on the version 2 firmware so I cannot help with this problem. However, I will check out this behavior when Nokia issues version 3 firmware for the E60.

Thanks Mark!

The behaviour disappeared - it was either because one profile was set to manual login or because i was launching the app from its standby shortcut. Things are back to normal now...

And I've foiund an odd behaviour today:

when I try to call an FWD number from my Gizmo account via my E61, the phone hangs for quite sometime. It's strange that I can't use my Gizmo account to call FWD, nor the other way around... 😞

My phone rings when a friend calls me via sip, but I got no sound...

It seems that a good update is still to come...
