N73 on Three (UK) and firmware updates

Hi all,

I recently got a N73 on Three and it's runnings 3's mutilated version of the 2.0628.0.0.1 firmware.

I'm very disappointed with the phone - it's really quite slow, there's random crashes, it appears to run out of memory, and there's a few interesting quirks the require a reboot occasionally. I doubt 3 will release a firmware update for this phone anytime soon - so I'm not sure what to do.

I'm a user of 'x-series', and make good use of MSN - I'm a little concerned that if I manage to upgrade the firmware to a non-three version (although preliminary research into how to do this hasn't gone so well [1]).

If I do manage to upgrade my firmware to the offical nokia release, will my phone still work on Three? Will my internet access still be inclusive? Will I still be able to install MSN Messenger and have it's usage inclused in the X-Series tarrif? Will I be able to re-program all the SMS/MMS service center stuff back in myself? Is there anything else I need to be aware of?

I understand that this might be a one way change, so I really want to make sure that it's going to work without turning my phone into a bloody expensive paper weight.

Thanks,

Ian

[1] Nemesis Service Suite no longer seems to be downloadable, however I did manage to find a copy on a VERY VERY slow site in japan or china... but i've not managed to get it to detect my phone yet - and even then I'm not sure how 'safe' it is to be messing with the product code

For those of you interested, I have emailed Three about my problems, and hopefully I'll hear back from them when I do. I'll update my blog when I do

(sorry, can't post as link unless I've made 10 posts!)

I am fairly sure everything will still work as I believe most of the X-Series stuff can be downloaded from the 3 portal. They probably can't tell you;ve got a normal N73 after all 😊

Ok, long time lurker first time poster, but heres my N73 3UK story!

I have the N73 on 3UK and it was fine for everyday use. I got TomTom for Christmas, but after reading all about the Bluetooth connection issues feared it would not work. My suspicions were right as my GPS receiver could barely keep connected for more that 30 seconds and I would have to keep turning it on and off for my N73 to keep finding it again.

I kept checking the NSU website for updates, and all N&3 forums for info, but knew 3 would not be releasing the stable V3 f/w any time soon. I complained to 3 stating that my phone is pretty much useless without my Bluetooth connection working as I spend a lot of my working day on the road and it failed to keep a connection to both my GPS receiver and my BT headset.

3 replied very quickly, which I was surprised with, but started off with the usual its your GPS receiver, its the TomTom software, and its nothing to do with the 3 software. But then the guy on the phone said 3 had the new V3 f/w available to their service centres and I could send in my phone for upgrade.

Three days later my phone was returned with V2 software! They updated the software to their new X-series with MSN, skype etc. But it was still V2! I rang 3 back, and they apologised again, and confirmed again that the latest f/w for the N73 was the V3 and they could upgrade.

Phone sent off again, and three days later 3 ring back and say I have the latest software for the N73, which was V2. I told them this was rubbish, but they wouldnt have it, again saying try another GPS receiver. The next day the phone was returned and I downloaded Nemesis and proceeded to upgrade my 3UK handset to a generic N73 ME edition.

This process, thanks to all here and the tons of posts about the process went without a hitch, and I ended up with a Music Edition N73, complete with V3 f/w. Before doing this I copied all my 3 access settings for entering them afterwards. But to my surprise when I checked all the settings, they had all 3 info in them..?! I held down 0 to launch the homepage and low and behold Planet 3 came up. I could send a text, mms, browse both Planet3 and the internet (the latter using the Nokia web browser as usual) call, video call and more importantly TOMTOM WORKS!

I have been on a 100 mile trip and to and from work and it has never lost a connection to my BT77 GPS!

I can confirm MSN will not install from Planet 3, because of the certificate thing, but that doesnt bother me. I can download tracks from 3 Music Shop and they play fine (in the funky new Music Player!) and do not bother paying 5 for games that I can find on the net, not that I play many games anyhow! I am also going to try the above post with the MSN install.

So basically 3 are useless in terms of what they know. There is a ton more knowledge in this forum than their customer service and service centre. You can either wait (maybe forever) for 3 to agree an upgrade with Nokia or try the upgrade to, in my case, the Music Edition.

It is still a 3G phone, with access to Planet3, my3 account and all the usual things a phone can do. But it has the benefit of Nokia (not 3) software support, so everything works fine. Plus you can get the barcode reader, great fun!! Haha! I cannot confirm whether I am being charged more for my packet traffic, but I think I am on a tariff that allows a fair amount of data traffic.

If you want any more info about what I did or how, feel free to reply, but go ahead and upgrade, you wont look back!

(Dont sue me if you brick your phone during upgrade!!) 😊

hi i see you got your phone to work after debranding it on three services. how please, does this work? i psoted somewhere else on this forum, regarding the fact that when i go on the so called planet three by holding down zero on my debranded ns eventy three from t mobile with a pay as you go sim, it says ia hve to buy an add on to get on the net when i click item such as services, add ons etcetera
is this right? please reply privately too me
thanks, will

I'm using my N73 on Three with x-series..

I debranded my phone over a year ago, and it works fine for day to day stuff. You shouldn't have to re-enter any settings etc, the only thing you lose in the upgrade is the 3 Certificates which allow you to install certain applications.

In terms of specific applications -

- Skype works fine
- The special version of MSN can be installed with a bit of fiddling, see below for details..
- Google Maps and Google mail are fine, although install them from mobile.google.com instead of the x-series site, so that you get the latest version.

Not sure about the other X-Series applications, but I guess some will work and some won't.

Installing Three MSN on N73:
1. Get the JAD file from http://mmg.3uk.buddyfone.com/web/j2me/MMG.N73.C41044.R4411.J001.3UK.PROD.ENG.C.jad and save it.
2. Open the file in a text editor, and delete the final two lines (ie the security check).
3. Install the modified JAD file.
