About Z: drive

Having just read through a good partof the FAQ, it turns out that Z: drive is ROM. Question is, what kind of ROM is it?

Palm has 3rd party software (e.g. JackFlash and FlashPro) what allow users to store and even run files from ROM. Reason being, Palm OS takes up only X MB of ROM in a Y MB ROM chip (where Y > X). These applications write to the unused ROM.

Now, back to the 7650. Is it possible to actually write to ROM?

My guess (I could be wrong) is that Z: drive is FlashROM, and if there is 15 MB left in there after the OS has been installed, perhaps it would be possible for a cunning developer to write an application to allow us to use the Z: drive, much in the same way that was done for Palm OS.

By the way, back in the beginning, many people also suggested that it could NOT be done on the Palm OS. They stand corrected.

Any comments?

In Palm or rather PDA, there are sets of memory slot (memory allocation) you will have some EROMs.

Some appl require to write on the EROM while the firmware or OS is write inside the other set of EROM which only can access thur palm serivce centre's flashing machine.

Back to 7650. The phone same have 2 EROM (z😊 which can not be tamper. Only Nokia Care Centre have the machine to flash your EROM (Symbian OS). As for the other EROM (C😊 you can only "flash" it with your PC Suite to install appl or from BT, IR or emails. The RAM (D😊 store all your wap, some temp files. Once you off your phone, all memories will be wasted.

I hope i answer your quiry.

Hmm. Thanks for the insight. Have been contemplating the possibilty of an application to tap into that part of the EROM. Pity Nokia Service Centres are not able to help us load applications into the Z: drive, or that would be quite handy. Hell, I'd pay for that sort of service 😊

NOKIA can do the flashing, but there are also other people that could do it. They invest in the same materials that would do the trick. I'm pretty sure that what you want could be done.

i doubt you could add apps in the Z drive even if nokia flashed it. :-?

What I meant was package your application into the Symbian flash. This way, it will be a core application already, like the camera would be replaced by this and that...

The problem is, can't compress it no more. 😃

True, but then again, I wouldn't mind replacing Camera wth Photographer, and making Spce Doubler a core application.

The only problem in doing that would be having to go reflash my phone every time a developer updates the application.... oooh, that could be messy *grinnn*

This has been discussed long time ago.JackFlash and FlashPro,Ximplify said that they were working on something similar, then the Custom/User Firmware idea, long time ago.In the end,it will never happen.

I just hope that whenever you are going to flash the Symbian to your phone, there are some options of not including this and that, replace it with your own STABLE app.

As long as you backup your files you can always revert back your phone after each upgrade.

I just hope that all the settings that you've done would be saved first.

Is that too much to ask? I think these things are reasonable and logical. Although, it beets the marketing strategy.

Like i said, that will probably never happen,Nokia has to include the apps you are talking about in the firmware. You cant just flash parts of it and others not.

We'll never know, maybe they'll take that feature into consideration, next time around. 😃
