N80 Problems

I've had my N80 for about 2 weeks now and I have a few problems..

Whenever somebody rings me, the screen on my N80 goes all 'funny', parts of it turn green and everything is misplaced, causing some parts to go offscreen, so badly sometimes that I can't see the name/number of the person who's calling me. I thought this may just be a firmware bug, so I tried to upgrade my firmware using Nokia's Firmware Updater, but it said that my firmware is up-to-date. So will this problem be fixed when a newer firmware is released? Has anyone else had this problem?

Secondly, I was at a MacDonalds Resturant today, and I attempted to connect to their free WLAN service. It connected okay but when I went to use the web browser on my N80, I typed in a web URL and after a few seconds a message came up saying "No gateway response". I tried several more times and this continued to happen. Is this a fault with MacDonalds' WLAN service? or is my N80 faulty?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated..

I had this problem with the screen and it was a loose connection within the phone and had to take it back to be repaired,

what firmware do you have

type *#0000# to get the firmware

umm i typed that in, and this is what came up..

V 4.0623.0.42
20-09-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (85.01)

so i have to take my phone back to the carrier to get this fixed? how long will that take?

It depends, I took mine to the Nokia service center and they fixed it in 20 minutes, but that was in Lithuania, I am not sure about other service centers..

Ive had a 'number' of N80's and 50% of them have had that very problem... the screen turns kinda greeny and whiteish and very jumbled so that as you say, you cant even see the number... mainly seems to happen if something else is going on on the screen or Im transferring a call....

The McDonalds thing... they dont provide free access for far as I know unless you have a DS, so although you can initially connect up, the gateway doesnt let you see anything till you sign up with BT openworld... although that may not be the entire problem the gateway response error seems to come up 'when it feels like it' and sometimes just disconnecting and retrying would work.

thanks for your replies guys. you've been a great help.
but after reading the last response, does this mean that the screen problem i get when i receive calls is unfixable? or should i take it back to be repaired? keeping in mind i've only had for about 2 weeks.

as far as the mcdonalds thing is concerned, i realized what the problem was. the website i was trying to access was temporarily down, and for some reason it didn't occur to me at the time to try a different web site haha.

The screen problem is a hardware fault in the connector. Reseating the ribbon may fix it sometimes (but, of course doing that yourself would invalidate the warranty).

I really, really despair of Nokia's quality control procedures, if they actually have any.

They have the highest along with Samsung in the mobile industry. You could always go with a Moto smartphone...

what country r u in? do mcdonalds in australia have that free WLAN service?

Tizz, you could try gently squeezing your screen into the phone next time you get that screen issue and see if anything changes. If it clears it is normally a sign that the connectors are correctly connected, so yeah take it back and moan. I live with mine cause Im sick of taking it back and everything else no works... so I make to and put it down to being an 'early adopter'

Ive made not to Nokia of all the issues in a study that I did for them.

I've had my N80 for about 2 weeks and I'm having the same problems. Although this screen problem doesn't bother me much, my phone randomly restarts from time to time. Sometimes it even restarts while I'm on the phone! Tizz40, do you have this problem also? Does anyone know a solution for this?

Thanks,
-KiN

random restarts sounds like f/w version or bad phone... what firmware are you on? (*#00000# to find out) although if you have only had the phone 2 week Im guessing you'd be on v4, in which case it might be a return to shop for exchange as your still in the 30 day period

Hi Kontraband, my firmware version is 4.0632.038, 13-10-2006, RM-92. I bought the phone over the internet, so exchanging it would be a hassle. Is there another way to solve this problem? Can I reinstall my firmware [if possible...]?

-KiN

I dont think you can re-install the firmware no, as anything that isnt a newer version of f/w will kill the phone. Theres a 24month guarentee on the N80 I think against stuff like this so you should be able to get it repaired, even tho you boght it off the net, for free but they will prbably send it away for 7 - 10 days.

0.42 is the latest firmware I think (can anyone correct me) so maybe you could update to that via Nokia updater to see if that fixes anything first... or see if you even can update.

Have you checked your battery connections too... does it restart if its jolted/shook?

The battery connections seem to be holding up pretty good, I can shake it around and nothing happens. The phone sometimes randomly restarts when it's just sitting there. I might just send it back to see if I can get a replacement. I'd love this phone if it wasn't for this, and the random exiting of programs. Thanks for your help Kontraband!

i re-installed the firmware on my N80 using nokia's firmware updater, and the issue with my screen seems to have improved..

the problem i was having (where the screen goes 'funny' when i receive a call) now only happens occasionally. prior to me re-installing the firmware it was happening on every call.

should i still take it back to see if there's anything wrong with it? or do you think it would be completely fixed when a newer firmware is released?

well, like me and a couple of other members have said we still get the issue with the jumbled screen and just live with it... so the choice of taking it back lies solely on how you feel

if its not a big problem to take it back then do it, you bought the phone with guarantee so you are entitled to use it so you get a working phone

Well I bit the bullet with the screen garbled problem, it seemed to happen quite often on my N80.

So I took the front cover off, same as if I were changing the Facia.

Lifted one circuit board off that isn't connected to anything.

Behind it is the screen connector.

I carefully un-plugged it and then connected it again, making sure it was firmly connected.

Touch wood I haven't had the screen problem since.

It was really simple to do and saves going to a service centre.....

The other problem I have noticed is the leather horizontal case I use for the N80.

It has a magnetic closure which keeps trying to de-activate the keylock.

I have held the phone next to the magnetic clasp and sure enough the keylock switches off and on.

So a new case is needed it seems....
