Changing Product Code / Upgrading Firmware

22 replies · 15,136 views · Started 13 January 2007

Hi all,

Sorry if I am covering old ground with you all.

I have read past threads, so think I know all I need to know...just want to check a few things.

I currently have a 3 (UK) branded N73, with version 2.0628.0.0.1 firmware.
I'm thinking of changing my product code and updating to Music Edition (ME). I know I will lose the apps 3 provide...but i'm not that bothered.

Is it true that if I update to ME, and don't like it, I won't be able to downgrade/change my product code and go back to the 3 firmware version?

Well...I done it...!

Changed my product code, then used NSU, which has updated me to;

V3.0638.0.0.30
30-10-2006
RM-133
Nokia N73 (01)

So I now have the Music Edition. ....I must say i'm not as blown away as I thought i'd be judging by some people's comments on here....but it was better than the instability offered by 3's generic version. :icon14:

No it is not true. There is software called pheonix that will "downgrade" the firmware say from ME to standard as long as you are moving from Vx.xxx to Vx.xxx

May I suggest you go To an IE variant rarher than ME as you still get the better music player plus you are able to customise the media keys. The IE product code I used was 0539364 which gave me V3.0638.0.0.43 firmware.

I have since upgraded to V3.0649.0.0.1 standard version and I can not downgrade back to the V3.0638 as it is dated earlier. I have to wait for a a V3.0649 IE firmware to come out.

You will find a lot more info on GSMhosting.com BB5 forums. Search for the thread n73 Downgraded Successfully

Hi there, sorry to hijack the thread! I have a couple of questions about upgrading firmware:

My N73 is with O2, firmware 2.0628.0.0.1 and i havent generally had many probs with it so far - i havent used it to connect with any other bluetooth devices, so none of the losing connectivity issues have bugged me. Also, the phone hasnt crashed on me yet and ive been using it 2mths.
My only issues are with the speed (or lack of it) when using the menus and especially the camera - its so slow its really starting to annoy me!

O2 are no help , and ive been considering the changing product code/reflashing route. Id like to know if this will alleviate my phones lagging probs? If not then i dont think i want to risk messing with it.

Also, what product code would i need to use - as i said, my phone is a UK N73 and i dont want ME or IE firmware, just the normal N73 firmware.

Im also scared to death of "bricking" my phone - the instructions ive found on the web all seem very simple, however does anyone have any tips to ensure a smooth completion of the flashing?

Many thanks in advance!

After a bit of searching the forums ive found that i need EURO1 product code 0537289 for my UK phone - is that correct? Also, any advice RE my prev post gratefully rcvd.

Hi Setspeed,

I'm no expert, but I managed to flash my UK Orange N73 last week. Its much quicker to respond since the upgrade.

as for IE and ME, the only differences are that in IE you get a few more applications and the media key opens the fourway menu and in ME you don't get those applications (but could download them if you want) and the media key opens the music player immediately.

I think you have to have one or the other of these variants, just depends how you use your phone. Personally I never used the fourway menu as I couldn't get it to do what I wanted, and usually want quick access to more than four apps, so set up my other menus accordingly, I do however use my phone for music, so I chose the UK ME product code. (check the sticky thread on N73 problems and there's a poster called Lovesign who posted some great info, can't remember the page number, but have a look)

Anyway, a long story short, I used Nemesis to change the product code, which was quite straightforward, though the application looks quite scary!

Fully charge your phone, then do a 'backup to memory card', then when loading Nemesis choose 'generic USB device' (you'll see!) and then just click in the product code, make sure it has a tick and update. Then I think you can 'scan' your phone to check its changed OK.

Next plug your phone into a computer with the Nokia SW on it and update your software to the latest version.

Do a 'restore from memory card', job done.

Magic.

i have upgraded to IE and quite satisfy by it..
thanx for this great tips!
cant wait to know the changelog they made for this new firmware xx.649.xx

Im trying to get NSS to work, but it doesnt appear to recognise that my phone is plugged into the USB port of my computer.
Anyone know what im doing wrong? Also, what mode should phone be in - PC Suite?

Should have chosed virtual usb when installing, and phone needs to be in PC suite mode and general profile in use.

I did choose virtual USB when installing NSS :con?

I dont think im doing it right. Im pressing the little magnifying glass icon "search for new devices" in NSS, and getting this output:

NSS doesnt want to play with my fone/data cable!
Windows doesnt want to add drivers and therefore NSS cant see my fone. Getting very frustrated.

This is a good guide... http: // thenokiablog.com/2006/11/28/how-to-update-original-nokia-n73-firmware-to-music-edition/

On NSS follow this bit:

Connect your phone and wait for Windows to install the drivers.
Open Nemesis Service Suite and click “Scan for new device” on the right-upper part of the window
Click on the icon “Phone info”
Click on “Scan”
Change the product code to 0539343 and mark the case “Enable”.
Press “Write”, and your phone’s product code will be changed (you might think that nothing happened, because the phone is still in normal mode, and the changing of the product code only takes a couple of seconds, but don’t worry, the product code changed !).

Can you use Nokia PC suite fine? Update this and the Nokia software updater to the most recent versions. Help> etc. Then install NSS. Then plug in your phone.

See if that works?

I would be very careful when restoring data after an upgrade...I too tried this once I had upgraded from 3's generic firmware to the ME Edition.
This resulted in my phone turning into a brick. Luckily enough, 3 have taken the handset back for repair and I should have it back tomorrow....but no doubt with the v 2.xxx firmware!

After much fiddling around with Nokia PC Suite etc ive managed to get NSS working - yes! Changed my product code to 0537289 and have ended up with Music Edition - not what i wanted, DOH!
Can anyone advise me if i can go forward now to Version 3.0649.0.0.1 - and what product code do i need to achieve this? I am in the UK.
Many thanks!

The product code post on 1st page of this forum shows product code Euro1 0527009 as being the one for normal unbranded N73 in Europe - can someone confirm if this is the one i need? Thanks!

I can confirm that this is code you need. When flashing the phone, be sure not to touch the lead or the phone or you may kill it. Good luck!

Nice one. Just did it without managing to wreck my phone!
Not much seems to have changed though - menus and camera are still as slow as a sloth swimming through molasses though! Ah well, at least ive learnt something today!
Cheers all, for the help - its much appreciated.

I tried the same yet i get a error ' internal module error' (o2) when changing to any other product code
