3g and Video assist light

Ello,

A couple of things I'm stuck with! One, I've gotten an N73 but put my older Orange sim in it. Now, because my sim wasn't purchased with a 3g phone, does that mean I can't get 3g? The icon appears (3g) for a few seconds sometimes, then goes off. But, music downloads seem pretty quick?

Also, does anyone know a way you can disable to af assist light when recording videos? It's really annoying me because I'm doing videos of things close up and getting an awful reflection from the light. I can only assume it's a privacy thing because it doesn't light anything up! Anyone any ideas?

Thanks v much.

I haven't been able to find a way of turning off the light so I just put a small piece of card over it...works fine...

Problem is with that is that you are disabling the flash. The reason I don't want the vid af light on is because I'm doing some close up filming on it and the reflection from the light is awful. I do want to use it for flash though, because it's pretty powerful.

I've been wound up by the light being on permanently in low light conditions when videoing, no way to switch it off that I've found so far. It also irritating that even on stills, if you have the flash set to off, it still comes on as an AF assist. There really should be some way of getting round that.

But I would argue with your statement that the light is powerful. It isn't particularly that good. The twin LEDs on the K750 were stronger. The one on my ancient W550 was easily as bright. The K800 whups it completely (but still isn't that good).

Theres only one decent flash available for phones at the moment, thats the SE MXE-60 add on unit for the K750/W800/W550, its got about twice the range of the K800s internal unit.

Oh I agree the light isn't that great. I'm a pro photographer! However, let us remember this is a camera phone, and I would never expect a brill image or flash from a phone. I just want to be able to turn a damn feature off! I guess they were under pressure under privacy laws - that if you are filming someone, they should know about it, but honestly, this is taking it a bit far!

I don't think its privacy laws that force the light to stay on.

Taking that reasoning, the shutter should always sound, but on either meeting or general profiles, mine is silent (still nice that you can just about hear the mechanical shutter though).

With some of the developments in capacitor technology, it is definitely reasonable to have a proper flash built in now, at least one up to the standards of your average point and shoot camera.

As a pro, what do you reckon to the quality of the N73s camera? I used to do a huge amount of photography, and the only real fault I've found on the N73 is that the colour balance is sometimes a little whacky ... but I've had the same with our Casio EX-Z600 (which seems to be incapable of getting the reds of the kids school jumpers right). There seems to have been a lot of reviews putting down the camera of the N73, but in reasonable lighting, the N73 is excellent (better than the Casio!).

The camera is very very good. The reviews where the picture quality isn't good appears to be, in my opinion anyway, the fault of the reviewer, and them not being able to take pictures. I have a 2k body with a 600 lens on it, and I can take very very bad pictures without much effort. I can also take very very good ones! To get the best out of the N73 you really have to start playing with the white balance and exposure. I'm going to put a sub section on my website of pictures taken by the phone. I'll post a link when I get round to it.
