The Perfect Alarm

Krisse has been hankering after the perfect alarm clock for S60 - in this article, both the built-in Clock and Calendar are examined in terms of suitability, along with two third party solutions. What should you use to get you up in the morning?

Read on in the full article.

This review does not include Handy Clock and Handy Alarm by Epocware. Though they are the most popular alarm solution according to Handango's best seller list.

A little technical details. All 3rd party solutions (except Handy Alarm/Clock) use the built-in S60 Alarm server. But this Alarm server (and hence the solutions that using it) has some bugs. For example on N80 the Multimedia key stops working after firing a repeating alarm. The same problem is on E61 with the Messaging key. Though new firmware releases might fix these problems.

Handy Alarm/Clock use a custom Alarm server and do not have such problems on any firmware/phone.

Another unique feature of Handy Alarm/Clock is a possibility to set not only an alarm sound, but also a sound volume, which is must have for a "wake up" alarm. 😊

The last versions of Handy Alarm/Clock also have the Snooze feature.

Epocware, I'm sorry about that.

I'll try to do a new version of this article once I've found out more the FP1 Clock application, and will make sure I add your apps to the article too.

"You forgot about OggPlay!"

Well, I was trying to concentrate on apps dedicated to setting alarms rather than apps that happen to have alarms included.

Plus I didn't know OggPlay had an alarm feature... 😊 Well done to them if it does though!

Epocware: which version of HandyClock has the snooze feature?

I have v4.03 (bought as part of the "Handy Traveller" suite) and it has no snooze. I have just downloaded the latest version of Traveller from my Handango account and it still has v4.03 of HandyClock, and still no snooze ....

"Handy Alarm/Clock use a custom Alarm server and do not have such problems on any firmware/phone"

But they still won't work if the phone is switched off.. :frown:

"It might be worth including "Time Machine" in a revision of this article aswell"

As far as I know it's not available for S60 3rd Edition?

Good point, however I am told by the Developer it will be very soon. When it is I think it will be a worthy contender.

Sad truth is.. the fine alarm app from 9300i should be included as standard on all higher priced phones. I luv my n93 but still miss some 9300i functions like this one. :con?

Cheers!

Epocware, Thanks for pointing out that Handy Alarm now has a snooze function. It's almost perfect now for my (very simple) needs and it's really nice to have the email key working reliably on my E61 again. Two requests:

1) How about relabelling the 'OK' and 'Cancel' options when an alarm sounds to something more sensible like 'Stop' and 'Snooze'?

2) Any chance of a configurable snooze period? It's, what, four minutes now? That's more of a long blink than a snooze if you ask me 😊

Hi all,
although some of these alternatives look quite good i have Handy Clock that so far has never failed me and has more than enough options for my needs and as i need to take meds a good alarm is an essential app for me. I also have no need for an alarm to work when my phone is off as it never is so if it ain't broke don't mess with it is my attitude on this, although choice is always good to have.

Oggplay is free and the alarm works as specified. I let the random mode song selection wake me up with a different tune each morning.
