Hey, just came across this site thru google and was amazed to see so many helpful threads and answers. so i thought id come here to see if i can also get some help wit usin my n80
basically my understanding is that it should be possible to browse the internet and and my shared documents on my pc though WLAN . is that correct?
i've tried setting up the wlan, by searching for availavle networks and then defining it as an access point. this all goes ok, but then when i get to the gallery and go to home network it says searching for devices and stays like that for minutes. (do i need to set up Upnp on my PC somehow )
also i avent really got a clue where to start with the internet browsing (i can only get as far as three's own services page which is free to browse - but this is not the actually internet is it)
sorry if this has been an amateurish post ... but i would appreciate any help in gettin my fone set up correctly (i've had a few experiences in the past where i've got large fone bills due to connectin though wrong access points etc)
thanks again for ur help, Kish
Not too sure on the answer to your first question, but I know its been answered here before so have a search in the forum and I think you will get the answer,
secondly, you can set the phone to "always ask" when you need to connect to the internet, so you know exactly which access point is connecting to the internet, I only connect to the internet when I know that a wifi hotpoint is available, or I am at home.
open the browser (the web browser with the white lines on the earth, and not the sevices browser, looks the same but no white lines), then goto options > settings > access point and set this to always ask.
Then you will get the choice which access point to use to connect to the internet
As for the filesharing, I don't think it's possible to view files on your PC through your phone, but if you set up the Home Media Server Software that came with phone on the cd, it's possible to see pictures/slideshows and movies etc that are on your phone on your PC.
I have yet to make it work the other way around. If you are keen on watching media that is stored on your PC, you could do a lot worse than check out orb.com, but unless you have an unlimited data plan, i'd stick to using that when you are hooked up to wi-fi. I use it quite a lot, there's nothing quite like watching a couple of episodes of Family Guy whilst soaking in the bath!

BHLC.
What about media center PC the ones like alienware makes anybody think they support UPNP?

That sounds like it should do the job, an alternative is "TVersity" - I just installed it 'cos I got an Xbox 360 and TVersity makes it possible to stream video from your PC to the Xbox. WIth TVersity last night I managed to download, play and save pictures and sound files from my PC on my N80. I have not managed to stream sound to my N80 though (e.g. like BBC 5 Live or Ministry Of Sound radio from the internet).

BHLC - Does orb.com allow you to watch mpeg/video? Streamed? As you say, perfect for being in another room away from the PC/TV. When I try to watch a stream from TVersity it comes up with "unknown format" (even though it continues to download the whole file (which is pointless of course!)
Cheers

Yes you can stream all the media that is stored on your pc, and if you have a TV card in your PC you can also stream live TV...I do this alot when I am out and about if I have nothing to do.

Hey Cash, are you aware of an app that can be installed on the N80 to play streaming files without adding a new app to the PC? i.e. if there is already an app on the PC like TVersity/WMC etc
Ideally I don't wanna install another PC app if there's something for the phone that will play MPEGs etc
Thanks
Hanco

I am not sorry, you will have to install something on your PC to do this.....
Orb is about the most versatile program to access all files on your PC at the moment, I have it running in the background all the time with no problems ..

You're "not sorry"?!?? A quirky way to start a post. Why would you be sorry? I can't think why you would ever feel guilty enough to feel sorry at all about it... unless you were actually the achitect of the N80 platform or the development product manager for it and all applications that have been created to date for it etc. LOL

Cheers for taking the time to answer anyway, I could not find this in any of the N80 posts to date.
😊
(Not sorry for asking either!)

Haha, sorry (again) that was a typo by me 😊...and afraid I am not brainy enough to be the architect of any apps for the N80...just pick up my knowledge from this forum 😊..wish I was..I may make a little more money 😊..

yeah, I thought that was a pretty aggressive comment until I moved the comma! 😉 HAHAHAHA
You can share your files over PC and N80 either via Home Network or via transferring Office docs / pdf's to MMC but you cant browse your PC like you would if you were using another PC. Its not quite there yet.
and yeah, Orb... its about the most easy going one with the most gain in this area that I know of.

As you probably noticed by now, I failed my English grammar exams, the spell checker works fine, just need something now to check my comma's and exclamation marks 😊..
theres a spell checker?? 😉
kontraband wrote:theres a spell checker?? 😉
Its actually a spell checker addon for firefox 😊..its real cool and now I never spell anything incorctly (sorry incorrectly)
ahhh FF addons. 😊
I have similar in Opera... I just forget to use it!
kontraband wrote:ahhh FF addons. 😊 I have similar in Opera... I just forget to use it!
FF highlights misspelt words as I type, so its quite easy to correct them as I go
I give my vote to Opera and the addons, altought firefox has the barcode for the scanner for long links🙄
yeah (off topic) but Opera is great for speed.
I think the fact that its a bit different to the FF and IE versions that a lot of people dont want to have to learn the new bits. 😊
FF just feels bland, Opera has a lot of nifty additions and just looks better then IE and FF
