I'm not entirely certain what makes a mobile phone 3G. But when looking at the new models coming out that are 3G I couldn't see any special features that makes them 3G.
Am I missing something here? What is it exactly that makes a mobile 3G?
Could the 7650 be classed as 3G?

Nope
... Depending on what country you are in....
Orange are trying to push back 3G ALOT because they simply cannot afford it at the moment [thats why there chargin tons on there tariff's] there in 25bn debt... so thanks to Orange 3G is not as soon...
3G offers Video streaming from - So mobile Video phones... Faster services etc... all a lot cheaper than Expensive GPRS etc... were on2.5G - Transition tech at the mo
3G means faster tranmission of data, the Nokia 7650 is a 2.5G phone 😮
I see, so it's only a faster way of transmitting data over long distances. Fast as in bluetooth speed?

Which enables Vid Streaming etc... Not quite as fast as bluetooth - bout 128kb/s
3G are not features like cameras,video recording etc etc.Like Jizzo said,3G is fast way of transmiting data,like UMTS,FUMA,WCDMA.

Yes,allso,NBA,NHL,FIBA,FIFA etc etc :rofl:
Officially:
1G = Analog
2G = Digitally encoded voice
2.5G = 2G + packet data
3G = single protocol for voice and data - all calls are data calls, but voice is encoded as data stream. Imagine voice over GPRS, but fast enough to cope.
4G = Voice over IP mobiles
3G data transmission speed is theoretically something like 1Mb/sec 😊
But real speeds will be much lower, about 300kb/sec, fast enough
for "near CD" quality streaming mp3 music. 😃

Cool! Hopefully it won't be too expensive, unlike GPRS!

wont count on it......
with 3G......u need a different type of handset......basically because it is a totally different scenario then the 2G or 2.5G (different modulation scheme, diff access scheme, etc). There are some 3G phones available but it isnt cheap.
I personally isnt expecting 3G too much.......what i am thinking is instead of 3G.......is integrating the mobile phones with Wireless LAN......now that will be cool. Being a telecom engineer....i have faith that this sort of sscheme should work......some companies has even make a Wireless LAN chip small enough to be put on the mobile phone.

Wouldn't it have limitations? Like BT has 10m only. It would take at least of how many people per area to be able to make a LAN of people with mobile handsets? This would also assume that people have handsets. I guess that would work in busy areas such as New York, I guess.
How about when you're in the mountain cave, contemplating... 😃
in the mountain cave?.......r u really gonna use multimedia and sort in the cave.......assuming u have enough signall to even make a phone call....hehehe

I dont think that has nothing to with wireless lan,even if you have one dude using wireless lan card and a running server it will still work.If i'm correct wireless lan is very widespread (you can even buy wireless lan cards in airports,bustops etc etc) and it works very good.Like cgo said,you need a chip that is small enough to fit inside of a mobile phone and someone to finanse it,nothing more.
