N70 - 3G is ok, no luck for 2G

Hi all,

Newbie here please be gentle... after a bit of help if poss?

I've got an N70 phone, it's on the UK "3" network and, up until now, has behaved brilliantly. However, during the last week or so I've noticed a bit of a problem. Well, hard not to really! 😮

I work in an area of the country that is covered by the main 3G network. Can connect, make and receive calls and stuff with no problem (including video calls but does anyone actually do that??)

However, I live in a 2G area as far as 3 is concerned - out in the sticks, so the network switches onto the O2 backup network.

Or at least, it should. As soon as I pass from a 3G network to a 2G network, I completely loose all signal UNLESS I go into settings and connect to the network manually.

I've spoken to 3. Waste of time, they suggested I travel an hour down the road to get the phone re-flashed at a CarphoneWarehouse Express store... when I'm sure I could probably do this myself.

Have you ever had to upgrade the firmware on your phone? How do you go about it? I'm sure I saw something from Nokia about introducing the capability but can't find the link... can you help?

Would appreciate any assistance anyone can provide - I run a business at home during evenings / weekends and the inability to make and receive calls while out with clients is killing me!!

Cheers,

Nope it didn't work - it updated to the SAME firmware version, so was a pointless exercise.

I know there's the new 5.xx series firmware (I'm still on V2) - Is it possible for me to download and flash the phone manually, or do I have to take it into a Service Centre (bearing in mind the nearest one is a good 2 hour drive away from me)

Thanks in advance,

As far as I know, O2 runs only v3.xxx firmware. The only option remains Phoenix, but this variant is illegal (and with a very high risk, you can kill your phone).
