I am using gmail for some very important emails, but the problem is there doesnt seem to be any notification of new mails via sms,
1, does anybody know if this feature is available with gmail
2, if not I could use the gmail forwarding to forward to another email address that has sms notification, does anybody know of a good email that can send free or cheap sms alerts, my first thought is to look at yahoo....
3, or is there any other system that I could use that I dont know is about ..
Thanks..

I think that bluebottle.com might offer mobile alerts. I'm not sure though. I'm a paying customer with them and they're very good and reasonably cheap. I'll take a look this evening for you.
Hiya Cash - Gmail doesn't offer a SMS alert service at the moment. Both Yahoo and Windows Live Mail/Hotmail do however so you could set up email forwarding to them. There is however another slight work around thats worth considering:
Each mobile phone has a technical email address, eg "phonenoATserviceprovidergatewayDOTcom/coDOTuk" (blasted ten post rule!) etc etc. The number is obviously your phone number with country code, eg 44 for UK etc.
anyway - it's explained better here....
ARGH!
hmmmm....bear with me...
I'm really really sorry about this Mods.....I'm not spamming...

Ok so its USD $9.95 to get the access version of bluebottle, and AUD $5.00 to get 200 message notifications.
Not exactly free, but very very reasonable. I've been using them to replace my godawful hotmail premium account and they're great. Pop3, Imap4 account access, webmail, really great spam filter.
I'd love to get a Gmail account - all the above, but better! Or so I've heard!!
Does it work with uk networks as well? Anybody knows what a 3 email address would be? Thanx

I don't see why it shouldn't work. Try sending a sms (or it might have to be a MMS message) to your email address - you hopefully will get the address you need then.
Can't send text to email address unfortunately.
ah....try sending a MMS then....that should go through.
Done that, got the 'reply to' address, added it in the gmail forwarding options, now i'm waiting to see what happens, i will keep you guys informed.
Another option here is to forward your email to a free activesync push service, then set that up on your device.
I do this with my M600 and the TyTn and I don't have to worry about missing messages in gmail; as soon as I receive a message that matches my forward filter, I get an alert on whatever mobile I happen to carry at that time (that's the 'push' concept -- stuff is pushed to you, rather than you going and checking it (pull)).
I have had quite a good experience with mail2web.com and their free service which allows OTA ActiveSync. I just forward important email from gmail (using filters) to my mail2web address.
The only drawback to this is that when you reply to the alert message, your outbound address is your mail2web.com email address. To get around this problem, I setup Gmail as a normal POP account (but I never use it for checking email). I only use it to send email so that the recipient gets email addressed from my gmail address and not the mail2web.com address.
Sounds a bit twisted; but its one way to solve your problem. Once you try out their free service, I highly recommend going for the personal pay service as it allows you many options (including custom outgoing email address).
Hope this helps 😊

I use the same setup with Nokia's Mail for Exchange freeware app. Works well for me.
