hi
sorry am a bit of a newbie really, but i bought an n80 on contract through orange. i ordered a 4gb mini sd card not realising that theyre supposedly not compatible.
However when i got my fone i put the 4gb card in and it worked a treat, only gettin the odd problem, were i needed to reboot my fone in order for it to regonise.
however i then upgraded my firmware on me fone from 3. sumthin ? to the latest after backing up all the info onto the memory card. i left the mem card in wen the software was being updated
and ever since switching the fone back on it says mem card corrupt. i can confirm that the mem card works as i have a sd card slot in my laptop with a mini sd converter. I have now formatted the card a dozen times, error checked it and defragged but no joy when in fone.
has the update of firmware now meant that it is now fully uncompatible?
i have been told that if you partition in the card into 2 2gb then it may work but i am unsure on how to do this?
to be honest i am suprised the card worked at all after reading thru the forum!
anyway ne help would be greatly appreciated and i can confirm that the 4gb card worked in my n80 before upgrading the firmware!!!! so i mite try and downgrade if poss?
cheers lads
Can't help you there I'm afraid. As far as I was aware the N80 only supports cards up to 2gb, so you got lucky for a while. As for formatting the card - there's program called Pocket Mechanic being bandied around, but I've never used it, so can't tell you if you'll be successful.
Good Luck,
BHLC
ok thanks m8 ill have a look for that program. i assume its still recognising it tho to say its corrupted
as if it didnt recognise it i assume it would say "no memory card inserted"
Yes, you are very lucky it worked. You don't happen to know what version of firmware you had before? You probably won't be able to downgrade without that information, or unless you want to send it back to your provider, and incurring the relevent charges.
Also do the style of SD you have? SDHC?
I can give you instructions about partitioning if you like, Windows XP will let you do it, but I would be very suprised if both partitions are viewable on your phone.
can ne1 else try puttin a 4gb card in n seein wot error message they get please?
o n i had 3.0.1.22 i think as the old firmware and standard 4gb mini sd card from mobymemory.com
cheers

Well I would do mate, but with all due repect, I'm not going to fork out for a 4gb memory card to see what error message I get. I've got nothing else to use it in when it doesn't work with me phone!
Just one thought when you formated the card was your computer set to format in fat 32 or just fat the phone will only like fat
For a card more then 2Gb only in FAT32! But even N-gage, old phone, supports 4Gb MMC cards. So, why not N series? Only FAT16:con?
Interesting point because FAT or FAT16 as it is technically known, only supports drives up to 2GB.
Ahh.... I remember my old Win95 machine with a staggering 8GB of hard disk space. I had 4 partitions.
I am not certain if the N80 can support FAT32 however. If I had my old 256mb card I would try it out. But I don't.
But S60 devices dont support partitions... But like you said,Win 95 and old software times!
I've just checked my phone with an old mini SD card that i formatted in FAT32 and it worked fine. I was able to copy stuff from the phone memory to the card and back using the file manager as well as taking pictures. I then removed the card and confirmed that it was still FAT32 using an SD adaptor and a card reader.
Wonder if any of the phone places would have a 4gb mini SD card i could use to test this.........

so no 4gb cards work with n80?
At the moment no-one seems to know for sure and, understandably, no-one wants to spend a wedge of their own cash to find out.

Chances are no, RE: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/55748/
But sometimes it does work. I would stave off updating to 4GB for the moment, as per the link above. At least until Nokia get themselves sorted and the formats get themselves sorted.

Actually that is wrong. The Win9x / DOS implementation supports 2 GB FAT16. However, the WINNT/2K/XP supports 4GB FAT16 with cluster sizes up the 64kb.

From what I have read elsewhere, FAT32 will not work with the N80 - but in theory, we should still be able to format a 4GB card to FAT16 at full capacity in WINNT/2K/XP.
Other sources though, tell me that 4 GB SD cards are only SDHC unfortunately and is incompatible with the N80 (they are nearly incompatible with everything!)
i had the 4gb card in fat 32 format and worked fine with my phone until i updated the firmware
i can assure you that sd cards formatted to fat 32 DO WORK with the N80 i have done this myself with my 2 GB card ! I do have problems with media player & WLAN but other people are having the same problems as i am so this must be phone related not the card.also i was getting these problems when i had the standard 128 MB card installed & formatted to FAT 16 when i first bought the phone hope this helps
