I have an e70 that I'm using on T-Mobile in the US and it's work flawlessly for almost a year now. For some reason it began acting weird on text messages... specifically incoming messages. My wife sent me a text yesterday at 3:30pm and I didn't receive it (or any other text) until this morning at 7:30am when I powered the phone on. My outgoing messages are all being sent fine (although some do seem to error a time or two before completion) but I can't receive incoming messages for some reason. I tried sending the settings from the Nokia site again twice and it won't even receive the settings SMS.
Today I traveled from one end of the state of Colorado (home) to the other (Colorado Springs) and then back to Denver tonight and it's the same result so I don't think it's a network issue. If it is then it's more wide spread than local infrastructure. I stood next to my buddy and sent him messages and they arrived immediately but his messages that he sent to me never arrived.
Any ideas?
I'm on Rogers in Canada and occasionally I don't receive messages for up to a day or more. I think it's just crappy overworked-network syndrome. Try it at different times of the day; you might find that your messages are delivered faster during off-hours. At least that'll show that it's a network issue.

I've been trying since Friday morning and it's now Sunday morning. I've received three messages in 48hrs and keep in mind I do thousands of incoming/outgoing messages a month. Whatever this is isn't standard network overflow. I'm just not getting most of my messages. It could be network but in my 13yrs of wireless and 7yrs of SMS I've never experienced what I'm experiencing now. There has to be more to it.
Ask the network provider if they had some problem! Maybe...
Just to make sure I called T-Mobile, got the call escalated to higher tech support and everything was fine on their end both with the system and my account.
As I figured it was my equipment. Not sure how it happened but somehow a settings changed itself because I know for a fact that 1) I didn't adjust this settings as I've never been in my SMS settings since receiving the setup SMS from Nokia.com and 2) Nobody touches my phone but me and it's w/me 24/7.
The settings was in Messages->Options->Settings->Text messages
The third option down is Character Encoding and for some reason this was set to 'Reduced support' which didn't sound right to me so I set it to 'Full support' and for some reason this solved it (it seems so far anyway).
What does this do and how was it able to change itself?
"Reduced support" means it tries to use only the default SMS alphabet, and that's the default setting on the phone when it ships.
"Full support" changes the default to Unicode.
It should only have an impact on how things are stored/sent when you create/write the message. It has no bearing on your ability to receive SMS.
At most, changing the setting triggered some sort of update, or whatever was the problem on the network side, was corrected around the same time.
Well, the problem was NOT solved. It only caused me to receive a few messages but the problem was not solved. I changed it back though and rebooted the phone tonight and received about a dozen messages from earlier in the day. Something else is going on here and I'm not sure what the dealio is. The call center number seems to be correct and I even received one of the setup text messages from the Nokia support site and was able to install them. I have some doubles of some of my access points now but it still didn't fix the issue.
The other day I changed the network setting from dual mode to GSM and it didn't seem to affect anything. I've changed it back and forth and it doesn't seem to affect the issue one way or the other. What should this be for use in the US on T-Mobile?
Any other ideas of settings to check? I've deleted all of my messages and also have plenty of memory so storage isn't the issue. Not sure what else to check here but this is frustrating as I believe friends may have texted to join for the Super Bowl tonight.
It should also be noted that my problems don't appear to be exclusive it incoming messages and several of my outgoing messages now sit in my outgoing box with an error message attached to them. I can select the message and manually tell it to send and after several times it will finally send. Otherwise, if I leave it it will stay for quite some time.
This is getting frustrating.
Does it work OK with your SIM card in another phone, or does SMS behave badly in the other phone, too?

I put it in another phone yesterday and it worked fine but now I'm wishing I had done some more testing as I only sent a few and received a few.
After beating my head against a wall for about 72hrs I finally gave up and did a hard reset. Texts seem to be fine so it was a software issue that I was unable to track down as everything seemed set up correctly. I made no changes recently and can't track down any random changes either. I guess the more computer-like these phones get the more computer-like they get, huh?
On to the nightmare that is restoring all my settings.
I've had an identical problem on the Nokia E61 - did the firmware change to Ver3 , did a hard reset - and for a few days incoming text works perfectly. Then it kind of starts getting erratic - a few messages come through randomly when I switch the phone off and on and finally sms's stop coming in altogether. Outgoing sms works although I need to resend them every time. Everything else on the phone ( Blackberry connect , SIP phone etc) works fine. Can't figure this one out and would really appreciate some help. Thanks.
Hi All.
I have N70 and I had same problem.
I was able to send sms , but I was not able to receive any.
I exchanged my SIM card but it didn't helped.
So, for me the resolution was completely stupid,... I removed my MMC card because I wanted to copy some stuff on it 😮 lol
I tried everything (settings, reboot, reset settings,....) and it didn't helped, :dontknow:
but few seconds after I removed MMC card I started to receive sms for last 2 days 😊
Maybe it will work for someone else too.
Cheers.
So I've been having this issue on and off for some time now and it seems that removing the memory card, rebooting the phone and inserting it seems to help. This makes no sense to me because my messages aren't saved to the memory card but rather the phone's memory so why this has any affect is beyond me. Also, these events are seemingly triggered by a high number of text messages saved. I have the sent messages set up to delete at 250 yet the inbox has no such restriction. Is there a way to have it auto delete messages in the inbox past... say... 500? I think that would solve this issue from happening as it seems to trigger it.
Today I had the no text message issue and didn't delete my inbox prior to removing the memory card, rebooting and placing the memory card back in. It worked fine for a few messages and then started acting up again. I cleared out my inbox (900 messages) and did the procedure again and now it's working fine. So, it seems that this 'fix' only forces the phone to recheck the number of stored messages and sees that everything is now alright. It might not even be the removal of the memory card that cures this but simply rebooting the phone might be enough. Perhaps if I was able to set a limit on my inbox like my sent items it would prevent this from ever happening again.
The problem occurred today was while I was dealing with this I received a new voice mail (first reboot) and checked/deleted it but my new voice mail icon remained for some time. I finally deleted the inbox as described above and did the full procedure (remove memory card, reboot, replace) once again and it still never cleared. This tells me that whatever messages that are sent to the phone while it's in this state are forever lost. For some reason the phone is telling the system that it got the messages when it never did so the system doesn't attempt to resend the message. This is why it never cleared my voice mail icon because as far as the system is concerned the message was received since the phone told it so even though it didn't. This bothers me because I don't know how many messages I've missed now due to this.
It's a few more hints though towards the overall problem. Anyone have any hints as to a fix for this? Being able to limit the amount of messages for ALL folders would prevent it I do believe but this seems more of a bandaid fix for the real issue which is most likely firmware related. I doubt we'll get any support in the form of updates from Nokia ever again so right now I'll settle for a bandaid.
Jeremy, thanks so much for your post - now I know I'm not alone. I haven't been able to send or receive sms's for a couple of months now. Yes, a few months :\ I would normally have tinkered with it like the usual technohead but... long story.
Just wondering if anyone out there knows of any current or upcoming updates that might fix this issue...
Thanks again all.
My nokia N70 does not receive sms msgs. It can send them but not receive them.
I only receive the sms' once i switch the phone off then on again.
Once i have switched it on i receive all the sms' that people have sent ages ago.
