Missing feature - Name in Mail application?

11 replies · 2,833 views · Started 20 December 2002

Has anyone noticed that the built-in mail client on the 7650 doesn't allow us to define our name? Instead, when sending emails, recipients see our email address (in my case [email protected]) instead of 'Kenneth Wong'

Is this a 'feature' in firmware 3.16 that has been resolved in later versions, or an inherent issue? Are there any 3rd party applications that address this?

My e-mail is fine. Whenever i send e-mail from 7650, it shows my name and not just the e-mail address.

It's definitely not 7650's fault.

kobe, are you using any 3rd party application? Also, do share with me your firmware version. Would be keen to have this 'fixed' ASAP. 😊

Could you also let me know where in the email settings you managed to configure that? I have gone into 'Messaging -> Settings -> Email -> Mailboxes -> Yahoo' but there is nothing in there that allows me to define my name in the Sender field.

I am on 3.16. using default e-mail app of 7650

You define your name in your Yahoo account. All you have to do is set the settings of the fields required by the e-mail app of 7650.

The fields that are on my system show:

Mailbox Name : Yahoo
Access Point in use : StarHub GPRS
My mail address : [email protected]
Outgoing mail server : smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Send message : Immediately
Send Copy to self : Yes
Include Signature : No
User name : ghoonk
Password : ***********
Incoming mail server : pop.mail.yahoo.com
Mailbox type : POP3
Security : Off
APOP Secure login : Off

Which one of the above should I be setting my name in?

Try loging to mail.yahoo.com, then Click on the "Mail Options", check your name there. What is set there should be the one that will appear on your e-mail to your friends.

You can't specify that in the 7650. You have to go straight to Yahoo Mail. 😉

Oh, that explains.

Sending mail from Yahoo mail isn't the problem. It's sending it from my 7650 that I find that my email address appears in place of my name, ie. [email protected] appears in the sender field, vs Kenneth Wong.

kobe24, try sending an email to yourself from your 7650, and check that mail using a desktop mail client. What appears in the Sender field? Your name, or your email address? If the latter, is there any way to have the former displayed instead?

It's my Name.

I guess the reason behind is, I'ts included in my mail address book...

Ok, tried it to another e-mail add of mine, and it displayed as the e-mail address only.

I rest my case...

Don't think it's the setting on the mail server. Normally is on the client side. Perhaps you try to set on your precious to... instead of [email protected] but to thy precious <[email protected]>

Our office is in Exchange so all of our settings are stored in the main server. I guess not all are the same. 😃 I will try your idea.

Edgedale, thanks for the tip. Sadly, it doesn't work.

Quite surprised that no one in the forum has noticed it to date. Either that, or I'm the only encountering this problem.

kobe24, it is highly likely that your Exchange server is converting recognised email addresses to match the userID in the Exchange user list. You can try dropping me an email from your 7650 to see if this is the case. My email account was listed earlier, so you can use that one 😊
