Content Copier Doesn't See EDITED Backups

I incorrectly backed-uped up my phone so now I've lost my inbox.
Using a hex editor, I can see the SMS's on the backup (B1).

I then changed the phone to save to the memory card and sent myself some text messages and did another backup (B2).
I could verify that the inbox was unavailable if I removed the memory card, so it was correctly saving them to the memory card.

I then used a hex editor to copy the text messages from the old backup (B1) into the new backup (B2).
However, Content Copier doesn't display the new backup (B2) in the list of backups available to restore anymore.

Does anyone know where on the MiniSD the text messages are stored? I'll hex edit that file if I have to but there is no E:\System\Mail or similar.

Is there another way to get at my text messages?

Any help or information is appreciated.

EDIT:
Tools -> Memory -> Backup doesn't backup text messages (already set to save to MiniSD)

Text messages contained in the file "index" inside the "Mail2" folder under "Private" (hidden)
However, they're not in plaintext so can't edit or append them with a hex editor.

Content Copier does back up the index file.

So, the only way to do this is to edit the .nbu file created by Content Copier but still have it recognized to do a restore. Somehow...
