I love my N80 - free Fring, free Wiki in your pocket etc..
The main appeal of the WiFi for me was going to be sending/getting MP3's from my computer to phone.
I guessed there would be like a Windows 'shared folder' type thing. Is there any way to do this? Playing about with memory cards everytime I want new songs or see my photos gets annoying..
Feel free to PM over advertising commercial stuff or whatever, thanks!
Yeah I was hoping for 'sahred folder' type stuff with the N80 too, but no joy. This question has been raised quite a few times in this very forum though, so you may want to try using the 'search' feature! There are quite a few different ways of sharing files between phone and PC.
1. Home Media Server. App that you can get from Nokia website that lets you use wifi to stream and copy music from and to your phone. It is built into your phone which is handy, it just needs setting up on the PC.
2. Create a simple web server on your PC and use the phone's web browser to access it. There are quite a few programs around that do this. One I used was called "Easy File Sharing Web Server". This way when you type in your PCs IP address on phone browser, you will get a list of folders from which you can download individual files/tracks.
3. Use 3rd party apps that allow access to your PC over the internet. ORB is a good example. ORB lets you (for free) access you files and your webcams/tv cards from the internet/mobile.
Just type 'n80 file sharing' into google for more info, I'm surprised you haven't done that already!
Telexy SymSMB (no personal experience; haven't tried it yet):

Apologies, pink. I have of course googled and searched these forums. I was just posting to see if any futher consensus had been reached by the experts in here!
Use the UPnP features of the phone. That's what its designed for 😊
Thanks N/A - SymSMB works really well, its just what I was looking for.
I now have a shortcut to my wifi-shared memory card on my desktop!
It seems a little slow writing files to my memory card (about 100kB/s) but almost instantaneous to the phone memory. Memory card is not so slow when in USB memory card reader.. I guess this a phone limitation? Cant write at USB2.0 speeds? Or maybe just my cheap memory card..

Sadly means trusting UPnP. I disable it everywhere possible as I have no trust in what it's doing, especially when it comes to opening up holes in firewalls.
Anyway, interested in this myself. Laptop doesn't have bluetooth, IR is too much of a pain and it would be nice to not require the USB cable to transfer files. I do a lot of transfer of spreadsheets from the phone for work purposes. I could email of course, but a neat file transfer would be better.
Is the Home Media Server thing okay for non-media file transfers?

I am using SymSMB too - works like a charm.
Same as you, with shortcuts to all my phone drives C: D: E: Z: on my desktop. And as soon I drop phone in charger I am getting automatic connection without even touching phone. Thats why I've got second charger for my working place. 😊
This way I did my own batch file to copy to/from for both - home and work locations.
Also read somewhere that SymSMB will work not only over Wi-Fi but over Bluetooth and GPRS as well, it will be slower but sometimes it may be the only solution available.
If you like it and considering to buy it, then keep in mind what I was told from their support stuff. Users who have paid for SymSMB v.1.10 will get that money deducted from price of SymSMB v.2.0 and on top of it some discount on the rest of the money. But they going to stop sales of 1st version week or two before start sales for 2nd version. So, paying for v1 + v2 would be cheaper then just for v2. It may be reflected in their FAQ section.
Recently they put some information about v2 at their website as well.
You could get more information at www.telexy.com
Just trying SymSMB and it looks pretty good.
Oh and they're doing an offer of $5.98 for version 1.10 and you get version 2 for free if you buy before 1st June.
