Hi first time posting my recently purchased N80 Mobile which I must add is great.

Have been reading multiple posts on unlocking Symbian O\S S60 3rd Edition (BB5) but have rendered any downloadable tools useless, such as : -

-- The "BB5 Unlock Calculator v4.2"

-- Phoenix Service Software for flashing duff phones

-- And others..

I have succumbed to the only way to unlock such handsets is by the Service Operator (until someone succesfully develops a tool - Dejan??). In particular three in my case which from reading other threads tends to be a tad more troublesome than other Service Providers, i.e Vodafone, Orange and O2.

Anyway, I thought I would adopt a more civilised approached and ring them for an unlock code. I gave the 'tried and tested' route of purchasing a Orange PAYG sim for a pound and register my phone with them and get them to unlock the phone at the same time however they appeared to be unsucessful in their attempt. I'll give them their due they did try a few times but in the end I lost credibility with them since they tried to fob me off suggesting the phone was faulty to which I explained it works perfectly well with a three SIM with. They concluded they were unable to unlock the phone and I should contact three about this instead. To which I did and have done so multiple times but unsucessfully. There 'ace card' is since I purchased the phone on the likes of an auction site it is considered second hand and I am not the original owner therefore I will need to get in touch with the original owner whom will need to request the unlock code, not me!

Anyway, I got a bit frustrated with hearing the same thing over and over again and decided to email them instead to get what they are saying in writing : -

We can only unlock your phone if youre the original registered owner. So if you are, give us a call on one of the numbers below because there are a few things we need to talk to you about before unlocking your phone.

If youve already called us to ask for an unlock code and havent received it yet, remember that it can take between 7 and 15 days to receive the code. If this time has already passed, please call us for an update. Unfortunately, we cant give you an update by email.

If you bought the phone second hand, like from a friend or seller on eBay, youll need to ask them to call us so they can authorise you to unlock the phone. If youre having trouble contacting the original owner, unfortunately we cant help you further. We have these security measures in place to protect you against fraud.

If we do unlock the phone and youre in the United Kingdom, you could think about buying a Pay As You Go SIM card from us. These are available for just 9.99 on our website (click on Shop). Or you can buy them at any 3 Store.

If you have any questions or need to talk to us because youre the registered owner, please call us on either 333 from a 3 mobile (free), 08707 330 333 from any UK telephone (national rate), or +44 7782 333 333 if youre abroad.

Thanks for contacting 3.

Regards

Looks like I'll have to stick with Three!

I'm posting this thread on a couple of reputable sites for the benefit of others.

Thanks

THIS IS THE REASON YOU SHOULD BUY A UNLOCKED PHONE IN THE FIRST PLACE

i pesonally think it should be illegal though, as it prevents freedom of choice!!
