9 replies · 2,435 views · Started 18 February 2007

i got a billion 5200g wireless router today to try and use my N80 through wifi and my PC hardwired took me 2 seconds to connect to the net hardwired but the crappy thing wont let me connect with wifi..

but before i go bugging them about not connecting or taking it back to the shop monday i want to no if i need a VOIP router to use truphone on my phone?
i have been using both the internet and truphone on my N80ie with out a problem on mates BT home router and a ORANGE LIVEBOX which both support VOIP as the BT hub has a phone on it.

but i dont no if there just routers that have a extra option i dont need if you get me.. i just want wifi access yes? is that enough to use truphone?

im asking as i cant connect to either net or truphone

what are you peeps using/reakon i shoud do/router ideas?

ideally i dont want a VOIP router as its twice as much and im skint 😞 lol

THANKS!!

It's not quite as simple as the difference between VOIP routers and non-VOIP routers. VOIP routers tend to have extra little bits like slots to directly connect phones and the like... this of course is no use to you.

However some routers are better as seemless NAT and STUN navigation than others. My ASUS W54g refuses to work with it without additional settings on the phone however a local bar has a BT Home Broadband wireless router which works just fine.

If you've not got your heart set on one particular provider tho you will most likely have a bit more luck. Gizmo already has NAT and STUN settings that will let you get through the majority of routers. Hopefully Nokia will release the VOIP settings SDK shortly and we'll be able to create our own settings kits for alternative providers. Until then the best advice is either to go with Gizmo or better yet find somewhere where you can try out different routers and see if you can make a connection or not.

but the phone wont connect to the router wireless full stop...

i thought it was a simple as buy a wireless router set up the security keys and it would connect.. but even without any encryption it still wont connect

phone is a fresh re-format and so was the router. i posted a question on there website and was removed username and all!! some help huh

anyone been and go a shop bought router that connects easy peasy to the N80 as im taking this one back tommorow!

On the main screen of the N80 (or N80ie) the wifi icon doesn't show the padlock when you are connected to a WEP encrypted network, for some reason the padlock only appears when you are using WPA/WPA2. It is a bug thats all.

I would go into your routers settings and turn off all encryption and make sure you don't have mac filtering enabled.

Then on you N80 go to Connectivity/Conn mgr/Availab. WLAN

Your network should show in list, press options/define access point.

You should now have defined an unsecured access point, when you browse choose this access point.

If it works you can then decide whether to enable WEP or WPA.

To do this first turn it on in your router, make a note of the encryption key you have used.

Then on your N80 go to Tools/Settings/Connection/Access points/ and choose your network.

scroll down and set WLAN security mode to WEP or WPA depending on what you set in your router.

Then go into WLAN security settings and set it up using the same encryption key as in your router.

Just out of interest, How have you connected your router to internet ?

I am assuming that you have plugged your cable or ADSL modem in to the router and then connected the router to your computer using a cable or wirelessly ?

Yea i hav done all that from a fresh formatted fone i have tried,
no encryption on router, with no fire wall
no encryption with firewall
wep without firewall
wep without
wpa with
wpa without
both 64bit and 128
mac filter on with mac entered- mac filter off

as i done a reformat i had no other settings in fone i am now sat in a mates flat (he has no pc skills i dne his system) i put truphone on my phone and ran settings wiz chose 128bit put in wep and truphone conectted in seconds, went to web, google and conected i dne this reply on my n80

my pc is hardwired through the router yes and no problems there

what router should i go for?

I would advise you go for one of the routers with a 'name', as they seem to be more reliable. So far i have connected to Truphone on my N80 to D-Link, Netgear, Belkin, Safecom. Last week tried a Zyxel, bought from pcworld, wasn't very impressed with signal but still connected well. Don't go for the new-commers in the business ( if you ask me, next time i will not buy a Zyxel router anymore). Also there's more support for the big names routers.

yes i got a D-LINK DSL-924 earlier

ran the router setup wiz, done my ISP details, chose hexadecimal, 64bit WEP it all installed quickly with no probs :icon14:

ran truphone wizard connected within seconds and i can now use the wi-fi on my phone to :icon14:

15 more :icon13: but got a name good customer service online and a free usb dongle :icon14: (paid 59.99 from currys) :icon14:

so D-LINK :icon14:
