MMC defrag

6 replies · 2,067 views · Started 09 February 2002

On a pc you can install or deinstall programs.
This makes your drive to be fragmented.
How does this work with a MMC?
Anyone know the answer?

If you have a card reader for your PC, you can defrag the MMC card as well. How much of an impact fragmented v unfragmented makes to solidstate storage, I have no idea.

Thanks for your fast reply!
I don't have one, but everything is for sale, so that won't be a problem.
I assume it is working the same way as every other drive on my system?

Good question...

Off topic
Like i have two pdf+ icons in apps and both works ok, but i'd like to know where it takes that other cos i have installed it normally.
Maeby it is from older installation or something and i'm sure that there's no other folders in my system. It just takes that double icon to same pdf app from somewhere..

It would be nice of Attelier to release their Essential Disk Utilities for ER6! Oh, and while they're at it, maybe SimCity also?

The card just appears as another drive.

I should point out that I am unable to defrag the 16Mb card that comes with the Nokia. When I try it says something about not being able to defrag 12 bit fat. The 64Mb card defragmented without problem. Both were formated on the Nokia.

I can't honestly see a defrag on an MMC making a difference (but people will argue against me no doubt). The reason being is that fragmentation slows down a hard drive, because the head has to seek a different place on the platter or has to sometimes seek on a different platter. This seeking time is what slows it down when dealing with files. The seek time on solid state memory is negligeble as all you have to do is address the point in the memory and read it off. So fragmented or not the MMC is going to run at much the same speed, the only difference woud be if the 9210 used read ahead, in which case there would be a small speed advantage, but I don't think there is enough RAM for that.
