The Nokia E90 hits the Web

So... I had one last fling with the prototype Nokia E90 before it was sent away to be updated - and I'd had numerous requests to try using it to browse various web sites. Here's my account of my final hour with the big-screened E90.... online (via Wi-Fi). Make sure you read to the end for some important talking points and technical notes.

Thanks for doing these tests, Steve! Hope they sort out those stability issues before the device ships...

I'm surprised about BBC News, as it works fine on my E70, fancy layout, images, dynamically updating ticker and all. By "works fine", of course, I mean "just barely manages to load the whole page, unceremoniously terminating every other app running on the device in the process, and then says it's out of memory".

These glitches just make Nokia's upgrade policy even more interesting. So at some point in the future, maybe in S60 3rd Ed FP 4 or 5 the Web browser with the latest Flash plugin will be able to show the latest Flash version. But the $1000 device can't be upgraded...

I have the v2 firmware, 2.0618.07.10. It's noticeably better than the version it shipped with, but using Web is still not practical for me (fortunately a combination of Services and Opera Mini usually gets the job done).

Apart from anything else I suspect something is leaking memory (though I haven't bothered to actually measure this) - it generally seems to get less stable the longer it has been on.

Still like the phone, but some things are starting to grate - like its love-hate relationship with my SD card, and the fact that Gallery no longer works (the two are possibly related).

Lets face it this phone is not small and the main reason why most will purchase is for browsing the web using the full wide screen.

If the web surfing experience is not on par with a desktop browser then the appeal has diminished.

A UMPC with/ without built in keyboard would be cheaper and more flexible option with it's full OS.

Surely Nokia understand that this phone is their flagship device and MUST provide unrestricted browsing experience.

Don't screw it up Nokia.......

I like it but I have one question about web??
Can I chat throw the phone using msn??
is these possible??

The phone does not come with a built-in chat/instant messaging app for MSN, but there are such apps available for S60 3rd Edition based devices and those should work fine on the E90.

Hmm thats odd. I have pictures of E90 screen with icon for chat software, plus just about everyone quotes it as having instant messaging!
