When I have broadband in a hotel I believe the hotel often locks the connection to the MAC address of my laptop.
Is there a way to use the same connection for VoIP (Gizmo, Fring etc.) using my N80?
Would one way be adhoc wireless connection from phone to PC and set PC to do internet connection sharing (ICS)?
What about if I want to use the USB cable? I know Nokia Suite can use the phone to give network access to the laptop but I want to do the reverse.
(or is there a way to set the MAC address of the phone???)
To use VOIP you don't need your laptop at all, just download, Fringe(which allows the following services Skype, Google, MSN). or go to the Gizmo wep page and download the Gizmo N80 application.

Sorry I can't post links yet
juice hes saying that he cant connect on his phone to wifi in the hotel because of mac filtering. Every NIC has a specific mac adress. So you cant change the phone adress. but you can spoof your mac adress on the laptop so it would match the phone. I dont know if the hotel would notice this but its worth a try.
I use a portable wireless router (apple airport express), which gets aound this problem with a wired internet connection. Not much use with wireless hotspots though.
Yes, SpeTz, that's it.
The hardware properties for my Dell wireless look like I could change the MAC address but that will break the licenses for some installed software which is locked on the MAC. Also, I am connecting via ethernet in the hotel - there is no in-room wireless.
I suppose in this situation a lot of people would use Skype on the laptop - but I am not allowed to install it.
Anyway, I am not 100% sure the hotel will be checking the MAC - maybe I can go down and check for wireless in the lobby.
yes you can set your laptop to connect ot your phone 'adhoc' and share the internet connection. getting the internet working adhoc has allways been a bit of a pain to get working in my experience. sorry i cant remember the steps to post but some wireless networking forums might be more useful. however you say you r 'not allowed' to install skype, so i take it its a work machine and you dont have administrative rights? -in which case you might 'not be allowed' to set up the adhoc network and share the internet connection -try it and see though.
as for not been allowed to install skype, there is a way round it. you can set up skype so its stand alone and doesnt need installing, look on the skype forums for info on putting skype on a usb drive as thats the same thing (and you can choose to put it on a drive or not if you dont have one, but the point is it will run without needing admin rights to install)
Thanks sm1thson,
Actually I do have admin rights but it wouldn't be wise to install forbidden software as the machine is remotely monitored. Anyway, I visiting a country right now where Skype is blocked (at least the web payments page is - and the telecom monopoly will no doubt be doing their best to block it's actual use).
I'll probably try and set up the adhoc network.
If skype is banned you can use other voip software, a free one that you can set up to use with most providers is http://xten.com/index.php?menu=Products&smenu=xlite , other providers such as voipcheap cost less than skype anyway.
But yes still try get the adhoc network working.
