P990 memory problems

Hi all,

I have some problems reading large Word documents on my P990i (just uppgraded).

There seems to be a limit to the the size of the file it can open.
I tried one doc (340 Kb) and that gave the answer "not enough memory and the loading stopped.
A 100 Kb file opened OK, though.
I suppose it is talking about the internal RAM..........

This strongly limits the use of Quickoffice to me since I have a big Memory Stick Duo card, but cant open the files on it 😡

Any solutions anybody?

Are your documents heavily formatted or do they contain grapics, etc? I've just tried opening a 512kb file (mainly text with a diagram or two) with no problems with 17% memory free.

How much memory do you have free when trying to open up as the document I loaded used 6 mb of memory to open.

No - my documents only contains text.....
How can I find out the amount of memory free? How can I affect it - increase it?
I have lots of free space on my Memory Stick!

I might add that I just bought my P990i and the first thing I did was to upgrade it - a firmware upgrade as I understand it.

2 ways.

In flip closed mode

- select More
- Select Status
- scroll down to see available memory.

The second (and most beneficial way) is to install Swiss Manager (free and pay for versions available in the software section). This will not only tell you how much RAM you have free (storage space available makes no difference) but will allow you to free up extra memory. One thing you'll find with the P990 is every MB counts.

Thanks for your help and your tip about Swiss Manager quite invaluable to a newcomer to this OS!

I now have 9.3 MB RAM free (15%) to me that seems like nothing in other systems 😊

Is is normal for P990i to work OK?

Best wishes from the north of Sweden!

Free RAM is probably the P990's biggest problem, especially if you're a serious multi-tasker or use the browser a lot. 15% free does seem quite low though as I typically have 21% free when I first turn on and I'm not on the latest firmware (which is supposed to improve things) as I'm stuck with a Vodafone branded unit at the moment.

Having said that most things from my experience should run quite happily, just remember to close applications down when you're finished or they'll run in the background and hog resources.

Hi,

When I use my P990i, it usually has 3 to 4MB free RAM (5%), even if there is no apps running. That seems to be pretty low. I installed Swiss manager, and even that is not able to reclaim memory (I tried both level 1 and level 2).

Any suggestions?

Kaushal

3 or 4 MB after a reboot is extremely low. What firmware are you running and what applications does Swiss Manager report as running?
