I want to use the gps in areas where there are no maps - like most of Australia, most rivers and most coastline fishing areas. How do I add my own maps - is there some way?
Nokia N95 - The Navigator (Smart2Go)
To the unregistred user above: Glo is the Nigerian telcom, right? I know for sure that there is excellent GPS satellite reception in west-Africa (in Nigeria): the closer you are to the equator the better the signal.
there is very less amount of detail on he roads in the Map of India...looks like its not been updated....only the old and ver prominent roads are available
For the guy asking about whether West Africa gets any GPS signal. I used a GPS receiver for the purposes of mapping a village in the summer in the Gambia ....
I got up to 9 satellites in signal at any particular time...and it never went below 5 satellites. Hope that helps with your query,
Laurence
On a n95, I purchased navigation license for 1 month. I used the navigation after I inserted the license number after the message "new sim detected". The next time I wanted to use navigation, it asked me to input the licence number again as it displayed that a "new sim was detected" .
Can anyone tell me; do we have to insert the license number everytime we want to use navigation?? Please help!!
Is it just me or is Maps routing generally naff. I have just got the N95 and the maps software does indeed get you there but it gives some very strange rotues that are obviously not the fastest. I regulary travel the southern half of the UK and so far on 4 trips this software has added between 1 hour to 1:45 minutes to all trips by poor routing (yes the setting is for fastest in maps). Also the strange routes it comes up with are not sugested by any other system I have access to - navicoe, google, michelin, the AA or the RAC who do always come up with the 'fastest route'
i live in the uk and have got 3 years subscription for maps free, with o2. i was wondering if all of the uk roads are included in the navigation option for western europe or just the main roads as i plan on travelling through europe and using this for gps. however i will mainly be travelling in the UK so dont want to use subscription and only get the main roads, but would find it useful using the navigation in other parts of western europe. if not i will just get the navigation for uk.
thanks in advance
The implementation of this is very patchy - in Melbourne Australia, the quality of the maps is exceedingly poor. Even searching for some major streets (eg Collins Street Melbourne, one of the major business streets in the central city) frequently fails to get a result, or comes up with a very obscure result. The maps are very inaccurate, failing to show a great many streets, and with little accuracy in the mapping (eg showing bends and curves which don't exist).
Here, this software is all but unusable to find your way - even if you can locate your destination, directions are likely to send you on a long, indirect route.
The other failure is the lack of anything like complete information for things like railway stations or post offices. According to the software, the nearest post office to my home is 17 kilometres away (in reality there are three within 1.5 kilometres), and there are at least 5 stations closer than the suggested station.
The mapping software is so bad, that Nokia could well be liable for engaging in misleading advertising in promoting the N95 here.
hi does the navigation voice commands work via headphones? ie for when on a motorcycle?
thanks

can any body tel me how i am going to download new maps for pakistan ... specially city Karachi .............
I own a Nokia 6680 and now an N95. TomTom 5 runs well on the 6680, by 'well' I mean at a good frame rate, and I fully expected the same from the N95.
'Disappointed' doesn't come close to my findings.
See for yourself:

I did this video so I know there's nothing funny going on. Details of the test are in the video description.
Can anyone confirm if there is a car kit from Nokia for the N95 that charges and supports full duplex handsfree i.e the same as my existing CK7W install/cradle.. Not at all keen to go down the route of cradle with bluetooth headset and power from 12volt adaptor.... Any info would be much appreciated....
i saw somescreenshots of the nokia N95 loading a map of malta, and i am curious to how to get the map , because my phone is not loading anymap. any suggestions woulf be greatly appriciated. Thanks:con?
Has anybody tested if the GPS can be accessed from a computer connected to the N95? Of course having the navigation on the phone itself is convenient, but being able to use the GPS information on a computer as well would be very convenient.
Especially since I'm a traveller and I like to keep my gear as compact as possible (i.e. no second GPS receiver around).
Thanks!
Jeez guys,
Nice to read so many reviews. I was wondering if someone has tried the MG-Maps software on N95. It works beautifully on E61 phones. Though you do nee to have GPRS so that you can sync with latest maps and street info.
Lemme know guys, Good Day.
Hi all,
I'm a little bit confused so I ask for your help:
1.- I have a N95 with the Smart2Go v3.0 application (V3.0 wk12 b02 OpenGL OpenBit MN). I see there's a new version v1.0 (not beta anymore). Is the version I have on my N95 newer or not?. Should I install it or not?.
On the other hand, where could I download that new version for the N95. In the smart2go website it is not available any version for the N95.
2.- If I activate a premium account (i'm thinking in only 1 year) and I upgrade 2 days later, will I still have the premium benefits or should I wait till the new v1.0 is installed?
3.- Nokia Maploader v1.1 is not available anymore in the nokia webiste (http://www.nokia.es/A4399558). Where can I get it?
Thanks for your help
Edit: I found the Maploader 1.1 version. Therefore only points 1 and 2 are missing

Hi all,
I need help, when I turn GPS on, just to see where I am at the moment, after period of time ( from settings ) screensaver kicks in. Why oh why, Nokia haven't make a option that when you charging the N95 screen is not go to powersafe mode. This sucks, because when you are not using GPS phone should go to powersave mode and when you are using it it should not go.
About this GPS not working, it will work but it might take a time even 5 min to find you, if you close it and open it again in the same place , it will find you much faster.
Just be patient
Hi, Just got my Nokia a couple weeks ago, but after followed all the instruction to map loading :
downloaded from smart2go, and
connect phone via USB,
deleted the map and reinstall all the map and voices too
but when i try to use the Maps in the Nokia, all i see is still the green bit of the globe and any further zoom in would be blank, no road map, no street map, ..nada!
Can anyone advise please!
Many thanks,
Steve
When I have my phone in my car and it's actively connected to the Handsfree system, the voice navigation does not work. If I turn bluetooth off, which disconnects the phone from the car, the voice navigation resumes.
This is with the Handsfree Link system in an Acura TL.
I've just upgraded my firmware to the new 12.0.0.13 firmware by changing my phones product code, and by using the nokia upgrader. Since updating, GPS is working perfectly for aquisitions.
Previously it would take anywhere from 2 mintues, to 30 minutes to acquire a fix, always needing line of sight to the satellites, but now, since the update of GPS to A-GPS (Assisted gps using the mobile network for location finding) fixes took only 5 seconds at most.
Now for the down side, I subscribed to one of the many city guide books available via the software, found the one i thought best (london map) and then searched by category for the London IMAX cinema. It found the location very quickly (southbank, glad I knew roughly where it was), then calculated the route from my home in Crawley, to central london. The route seemed a little strange, avoiding the motorway next to my house, and seemed to take me via Kingston to get to central london. Still, journey time was about the same, and I do know of a good route via the same area in cases when traffic is bad on the ever popular M23/A23. So I set off, merrily following the very clear and precise guidance, the clear screen, and the sense of suprise as my ETA kept decreasing far greater than my presumeed distance from the cinema.
Imagine my horror, as we hit Kingston to find that our destination was only 1 minute away. Things took a turn for the worst, when we arrived at a train station just outside Kingston being told "you have reached your destination".
After a few choice words, and a quick google search to check there wasnt an imax cinema stuck on platform 1, I changed my route destination from the guides "London IMAX (Southbank) to just the Nokias destination of Southbank (London) to find a much more realistic eta, and the correct location.
The lesson learned, whilst the content from Nokia is good, triple check, and check again any information from either Third parties or Nokia to make sure your destination is actually where it is supposed to be. Someone from the guide I had used, obviously put a wrong co-ordinate in there data, and the result, my girlfriend and I being 15 minutes late for the Premiere of Transformers as the IMAX.
I am using 3 days trial for GPS. I test it and It really works. I love it. However, When I read you topic, you said that "there is a voice guidence". But I dont know why my phone doesn't have "voice guidence." In other words, I didn't hear anything while I was testing it. Maybe I didn't hear the voice because I was using FREE TRIAL?

Do you have voice installed ? you can install it the same way as you installed maps.
Recently got N95, wouldn't connect to gprs - here's why...
Both times my partner upgraded his phone (N70, N95) he was unable to get a gprs signal and got message "packet data unavailable", even when it appeared that a connection should be there, and all the settings were correct.
The problem was that the phone needed to be activated by the network, before it would accept the connection. The supplier was unaware of this, and the 1st time this happened (N70) he was supplied with a total of 3 replacement sims, and the phone supplier was convinced it was the sim, or some setting that was not right.
Eventually someone who knew what they were talking about advised that the phone needed to have the facility switched on by the network provider. With the N95 he was able to tell the supplier to contact the network provider, and activate the phone's gprs
This may have happened due to starting a new contract.
Hope this may be of help to any of you who can't get a connection
Anyone know if there are any "good" Nigerian maps available as of yet? I work in Warri , Delta State and spend most of my time here. It would be nice to be able to actually use my toys most of the year and be able to plot offshore platforms and bases and whatnot. No sense in having capabilities unused
hi i am a keen walker can a os map be installed into my n95 if so how do i go about it ? many thanks. Gary.

regarding the maltese maps for the N95 i tried sevveral places on the www to find any but only the basic nokia maps for malta were found, which as said previously are nothing out of this world-would appreciate if anyone can advice of a better option.

I bought an N95 for the navigation and have been let down big time. It won't find routes. I live in Australia, downloaded all the maps, boughy a license and still nothing. I reinstalled maps 2 and still nothing.
