hello
my university has a wireless network that we can use for email and browsing but i cant seem to connect to it with my Nokia N80 internet edition. i cant seem to configure it. the uni has two networks, an open network for windows based computers. and a secure network for macs. my phone connects to the open network but that tells me to download a VPN client, i downloaded the VPN client for my n80 but cant seem to configure it. i am posting the link to the network settings for the wireless. if anybody can post the settings i will need to configure to make this work.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say 'VPN client' as the instruction PDF makes no mention of it.
It does state that you need a device that provides EAP-TTLS support, and this 'securew2' client provides this for Windows (it also provides a hook into NDS to retireve the necessary certificate for the device).
In essense, what you have to do is install this certificate on your N80, in order for it to connect to the network. Since this certificate is generated via the NDS password; I think you'll need to copy the certificate from your computer to the N80 (via bluetooth) once you have logged in.
N80 already provides EAP-TTLS/MSCHAP2 support and support for an additional EAP method.
On your N80, follow these steps:
Settings > Connection > Access Points
Then create a new access point, or edit an existing one, and adjust it as per follows:
WLAN security mode = WPA/WPA2
In WLAN Security settings
WPA Mode = EAP
EAP plug-in settings = make sure EAP-TTLS is checked
TKIP encryption = Allowed
From here on out, you need the certificate installed on your N80; for which I guess you'll have to find it in a connected Windows machine? Sorry, this is as far as I can give you help without guessing the next steps. One thing you can try is to see if the root certificate is available on any campus secure server (browse any https:// location). This will get you one half of the required certificates (I think -- not all places are setup the same). Best to befriend someone at the IT department (hey, maybe a cute girl works there?) and have them show you the steps.
To configure the Nokia Mobile VPN software, you need to create a, so called, policy file.
The tool Nokia provides for that is called Nokia Security Service Manager. Unfortunately, the only way I know how to get this NSSM server software, is by buying a Nokia VPN gateway product.
Attempts to generate policy files manually you can read about in this long thread on Forum Nokia:

thanks for the reply guys but i dont know if i understand correctly. can someone perhaps make a certificate for me? i did email the IT department but i think they are dumb, i should perhaps pay them a visit. i will try connecting with my laptop and see if i can find any certificates or anything.
did u guys take a look at the mac guide? i think i should be able to use that as well if i can get the settings correct.

During exporting of the certificate there is an question to yes or no export the private key. Is the private key required during export? In my config I can't set it to the yes option (greyed out, not selectable).
Cheers,
okay so i took my laptop to uni the other day and now it is successfully configured to connect to the network and i could browse etc. the main thing i want to do is use Truphone and browse. but first i need to connect
can anyone help me make the settings or policy file so i can put it on my N80?
To be honest the Nokia VPN software is pretty piss-poor. It's there solely to implement their own proprietry VPN server software that no one is going to buy because everyone already has Cisco VPNs -- I'm not some Cisco fanboy, that's just what happens, especially in business.
Basically a VPN is a tunnel through the network that actually connects you too it, think of it as a network within the network. It is also encrypted so no one can work out what is being sent which is why it's so popular on open wifi networks.
Both your windows and mac networks have a VPN in them, and to get connected you need the certificate which is not generated by your network.
From here you have a few options:
1) Convince the IT staff to install the Nokia VPN software, I doubt they will, it costs a bundle
2) Hack together the certificate using the method in No 3 above. Something which has failed for me.
3) Convince the IT staff to install a less secure network, something I -- again -- seriously doubt they would do.
None of the options are particularly viable. Another option could be to wait around to get EduRoam in your University, they're pretty common all around Europe and Nokia said they will support the (now very common) encryption protocols in a later release of their VPN software.
I know this doesn't help, but it's the best I can offer.

I followed the instruction in this link and I want able to setup vpn client on N80 to connect to my school network. I didn't need any certificate at all.
