Twitter is a social networking, text message based service provided by a company out of San Francisco. Basically, you create a group of your friends, they all join it using their mobile number. You send a message to the twitter service and it redirects it to all your friends. You can use it to collaborate on projects, meet up at a bar, etc. It broke pretty big at SXSW interactive. Web 2.0 is the mashup concept. A large component is user generated content (e.g. YouTube videos). Blogging and social networking (e.g. Facebook and MySpace). Hope that helps some!
