Hi,
We've just released BugMe! - our first application for the Series 60 platform.
One of the challenges we see in making a success of this product is enabling users to get the software onto their phones. I'm not convinced that IR or Bluetooth is in use by many 'ordinary folk', so we've been looking at easier ways.
One of these is delivery of applications by SMS, which we are trialing at the moment - I'd like to invite people here to test it out...
To get the BugMe! trial onto your 7650, simply send a text message containing the word "bugme" to +447766244891 - you'll get a message back in return - open that message and click the 'world' icon. Installation will now begin - just follow the prompts to complete.
I'd be very interested in your feedback on this means of application download - in particular:
a) Does it work?!
b) Could we improve on anything, make anything clearer?
c) Downloading this trial costs 1 regular SMS - but would you pay to get trial software delivered this way in the future - say 1 or 1 euro?
Please feel free to reply direct by email to [email protected] if you prefer.
Cheers,
Iain
hmm.. interesting...
but no, wont invest 1 for a trial version, unless it would be refunded
on getting the full version later.
I think this is great about users with no GPRS or WAP service.
Shame about the price. 😞
I'm with JyriK, I'm afraid. Good idea though.
Ooops - I should clarify that there is no charge for downloading this trial (other than 1 sms message) - I was exploring options for the future... I'll edit the original message to make that more clear...
Thanks,
Iain
No charge? I will try it right now.(i'll have to delete some images first 😃 )
Well,i tried it.No success.
I recieved the message. When i click on the world icon it says downloading message and nothing happens afterwards.
One more thing, the error might be on my side because my operator is the devil!!!
I'm informed that the page is too big to be sent to me.
I havent tried this method but i cant see it being very popular if there is a cost as most people that dont have a bluetooth or IR on their computer email software to themselves and download it on the phone at no cost except for the connection charge which some get for free anyway.

Hi mate,
I got the SMS message ok, and it got about 3/4 of the way through downloading the .sis file, then i got the following error:
"pushviewer: unknown file format"
hopefully you can make more sense of that than me 😊

p.s. : im using t-mobile, with sms's being dealt with via GPRS

Note that even if you "order" the software via SMS, you still need WAP connection to download the file.
This delivery method is called a "Push message". I have seen a ringing tone order using same method.

a) yes, it works. I'm in Finland.
b) can't think any specific improvements right now....
c) I don't want to pay extra for downloading trial version. Anything can happen to interrupt downloading or installing so you must have an option to download the software again -- for free.

I thought that it was some kind of new way of sending files via SMS (Didn't think it was possible) invented by Electric Pocket.
