Music over bluetooth cuts out

THis is my first time with bluetooth headphones, so it may be usual, but having a nice shiney N95 I thought I'd try out listening to my music wirelessly, and bought a pair of Nokia BH-501s.

Whilst initially delighted to find I could listen to my music without the hassle of wires, remotes etc, I was a little disapppointed to find the music frequently cutting out. Is this standard practice over bluetooth or are the 501s a cheap pair of bins that aren't really up to spec?

That shouldn't be happening (and no its not common). How far away was the handset? I can't comment on 501s directly as I've not used then much.

Phone in my pocket, headset on, walking down the street. Actually, it cut out whilst sitting down on the train as well. All in all, I've not been too impressed with the bins due to this problem. It's not a regular cut out, more an occasional stutter. Never having used them before, it makes me think nice idea that doesn't seem to work very well, which for 40 is a pain in the preverbial.

You may get a cut out occasionally if the Bluetooth signal is blocked, but its not something I've had with the phone in my pocket / sitting down (different headset though).

I would suggest you have the phone in your right hand pocket as I think that is the side the Bluetooth receiver is on in the 501s. Having the signal going through your body should be OK, but worth a try.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Might be worth trying with the phone in front of you in line of site from the headphones and see if you still get them?

Just had a thinks bubble on this, as I experienced the same symptom when switching to another app using the Task button. Thinking back, te problem surfaced on the train while travelling through a weak GSM signal spot and where the 3G is non-existent, perhaps the phone's processor was too busy trying to get a phone signal and diverted its attention from the bluetooth stack.

Now I've switched off 3G, I'll try again on my way home this evening and see if that makes any difference, as sat here in the office, it's working fine.

I've just got the Motorola Motorokr S9 bluetooth stereo headphones and I'm having a few problems. I can pair the S9's to the phone no problem and everything works fine. When I power them off they disconnect as they should - so far so good. When I try to re-connect by pressing the power button on the S9's they connect and then immediately disconnect. I then have to go to the bluetooth menu on the phone, select the S9's and use the connect option and they then connect to the N95. Surely they should just connect by pressing the power button? I have set them as authorised in the bluetooth devices menu. I'm also getting drops in sound too which is very irritating. Does anyone else have this combination and if so, are you experiencing the same problems or are you having the same issues? I have already replaced the S9's for another set but both had the same symptoms so I'm thinking it's a Nokia thing - running the latest 11.0.026 firmware BTW.
Any help greatly appreciated!

I've had exactly the same problem with my Vodafone N95 and Moto S9 headphones. I found that the sound cut out/interrupted whenever the silly Vodafone red 'quotation mark' logo screensaver came on. After a while it settles down and works normally, but its still pretty unsatisfactory. To get around it I enabled one of the naff screen visualisations, which seems to prevent the phone going to screensaver mode, but almost certainly at high cost to battery life.

Perhaps I should upgrade the firmware and get rid of Voda branding? I would but am a little afraid of the process.

Do your S9's connect automatically (and stay connected) when you press the power button? Mine connect and immediately disconnect and I need to reconnect maually via the phone. I'll give the screensaver a go and see if it works. I have the latest firmware - my N95 was O2 branded so I changed the product code to Euro 1 and flashed it.

Yes, the S9's stay connected. I initially had problems with the phones not playing music at all, but after a couple of pairings/deletions they have been fine since.
I had the screensaver problem with a bog-standard bluetooth earpiece before, so knew roughly what to expect.

Cheers Garty. Seem Nokia have changed something in the bluetooth part of the latest firmware. Maybe it will be fixed in the next release - fingers crossed. Seems that I'm stuck with manually connecting until Nokia resolve it. I have been playing with the S9's again this morning and I think the drop outs in sound maybe be due tho the 3G/2G signal switching. I'd prefer to keep my phone on 3G as I'm on 3 and from what I've read elsewhere 3 aren't to keen on their customers locking to 2G as they have to pay their roaming partner for the calls.

Yes I think it has something to do with the latest firmware too. I have a Parrot BT handsfree in my car and with firmware 10... it worked verry good, but after a firmware update to 11... the sound continously cuts out. I hope Nokia fixes this issue in the next firmware.

Oh dear!

I just upgraded the firmware (it seems the thing to do!) and my S9's don't seem to work very well at all now.
When I use music player with the S9 headphones 'off' all is well - I can use normal wired headphones etc. As soon as the S9's are connected the app hangs and the only way to get things back to normal is to either restart or whip out the battery.

This isn't very good is it? and to cap it all the S9's only work on my N73 in glorious single ear mono! i think they will be going back even though I doubt its Motorolas fault. Just to satisfy my curiosity I shall try them with my old Moto E1000 and also my daughters Sony Eric

Looks like I shall be cycling without tunes unless I go back to a wired set :frown:

I have tried 2 sets of S9's and both have the same symtoms so I think it's safe to say it's a Nokia problem and from Garty's previous post the latest firmware is the culprit.

Which Parrot kit do you have? I don't have any problems with my CK3100 and the N95 with the new firmware. Have you tried deleting the existing pairing and re-pairing again?

Garty
Do you have to manually connect the S9's with the new firmware?

The S9 connects as soon as I press the connect button, but more often than not i get no sound (keypress tones, clicks, hisses or calls) in them. I also tried it with my Motorola HF800 Bluetooth speaker in the car and also my wifes sunvisor-mounted BT handsfree all to no avail, and they worked perfectly before.

I am really fed up, and shall be making various complaints tomorrow to see if I can achieve anything, although my hearts aching already knowing that the problem is almost certainly Nokias and that its unlikely that a quick fix is coming.

I might be better off taking the phone back to Vodafone and attempting to get a new one with good old version 10.* firmware! I will of course keep you posted.

Cheers Garty. Seems I'm slightly better off than you! Mine do connect although I have to do it via the phone and I get sound too. I do get occasional drops in sound but they are working. Just a thought - did you restore a backup after the firmware upgrade? There have been a few posts suggesting restored backups cause problems. Of you haven't already a hard reset might help?

Ha ha I've had quite a day!

They always say when Microsoft brings out a new operation system wait until the first service pack release!

Yes DeezerD I did the product code change, firmware upgrade (all going well to this point) then when I did a restore it all went wrong. I got the 'return to dealer' message and all appeared lost. However, reading the forum i found the reset details (ON - * - 3 - Green) and it all came back to life. All except the bluetooth that is, and apart from my BT GPS no audio devices seem to be working properly if at all.

I see from other forums that the general concensus is that Nokia works fine with Nokia BT devices (with a few exceptions) but anything else and there will be problems. I'm just glad that i don't own an expensive car kit (or an expensive car) as the stark choice is to give the N95 back and revert to something more reliable and dare I say less desirable?

I could just be patient and await the inevitable Nokia firmware upgrade, as so many people seem to be having troubles, but part of me tells me that I shall be back to the N73 tomorrow, and N95 will be in its box being slung about by Royal Mail. I can always get another when they have ironed everything out.

I didn't send the N95 back today, it looked too good to send away, and after a good long think about it I gave it one last chance. I read somewhere that if i turned Bluetooth off on the phone first, then pressed the button on the S9 phones, waited a few seconds and then turn the phone Bluetooth back on it would be OK.

I am pleased to say that it does work! also after doing this and disconnecting the S9's when I've finished with them I can use my BT earpiece, BT car speaker thingy and just about everthing else. I even took a call with the S9's on and was able to speak with the person on the other end of the line clearly (but I was so amazed I nearly died of shock!)

I haven't done anything to the phone other than the above procedure, it is a bit of a faff, but I can live with this until Nokia do something to ease things with a proper firmware upgrade.

In the meantime, thanks to the person who suggested the quick fix, its worked for me.

Glad you got it working! I got the same suggestion from another poster on the Nokia forums and was going to post here but you've beaten me to it! This works for me too, still getting sound drops but I think this is more to do with the location of the phone and possibly something interfering with the signal. Hopefully it will be addressed in "proper" firmware update.

Guys I've had this exact problem from day one with the orginal firmware (still have the problem with new firmware as well).

I play ALLOT of streaming music to my sony headunit in the car, the phone sits 30cm from the headunit all the time, what I have noticed is it cuts out when the phone is switching to a different cell site.

Im almost certain this is the problem as it cuts out in the exact same spots each day on way to work, so I'm almost certain it has somthing to do with signal or cell site swapping.

Hopefully nokia fix it as my old HP didnt do it.

deezer-d:
I have Parrot 3400 LS-GPS and I have not tried to pair it again, will try when I have time.

I have given up on the S9's and I'm now the proud owner of a Nokia BH-500. I have none of the problems with the BH-500 that I had with the S9's. When I press the power button it automatically connects as it should and I have had no drops in sound at all. I can also use my Shure earphones which give me better sound too. The down side is that I don't have a totally wireless solution but I do have a setup that works.
