How do I?

Hi,
Please help me. I just bought N73 yesterday and it shows:

Version 3.0638.0.0.1
30-10-2006
RM-133

I want to update the firmware but before I will do it, I have some questions that I think you guys can answer :

Does updating firmware will delete the default software in the memory card and phone memory? I just run a backup using PC Suite and it is now stored in my computer. Then I made another backup using the phone backup and it store it in the memory card.

Do I need to insert the external memory card while updating the firmware or is it best to not to insert it to avoid deletion of default software on the memory card?

I don't have card reader right now, is there any other method to backup all the files in the memory card to the computer? I tried using PC Suite but it does not permit me.

Thank you for any help and answer.

You certainly can copy all your stuff from N73, before upgrading. Connect your N73, choose "masstorage" connection. Go to Root of PC. There should be SD:/ that is phone´s memory card. Copy all necessary files (mp3s or whatever) to a location in your HD.

But here is the upgrade procedure (source: Nokia website)

Nokia Nseries phone software can be updated via PC. Follow these steps:

1. Check if you have the latest version of Nokia PC Suite (6.81 or later).
2. Backup your phone memory to your PC using PC Suite (to preserve your OMADRM activation keys, etc.)
3. Copy your files (music, videos, documents, images etc) from the Nokia hard drive or memory card (if available) to your PC (use of USB mass storage recommended).
4. Copy the original SISX, Java, etc. installation files for your applications, themes, etc. from your Nokia hard drive or memory card to your PC. (Do not simply copy over the installed directories/files.)
5. For Nokia N91: Format your hard drive by selecting Tools > Hard drive > Options > Format hard drive > Quick format (instructions also in user guide).

For other Nokia Nseries phones: Format memory card drive by selecting Tools > Memory > Options > Format mem.card > Format memory Card? Data will... > Yes (instructions also in user guide).
6. Proceed with phone software update.
7. After the phone has completely started up again, reset your phone memory by selecting Menu > Tools > Settings > Phone > General > Orig. Phone Settings and enter 12345.
8. Restore your phone memory from your PC using PC Suite by selecting Backup from the PC Suite menu and then selecting Restore.
9. Copy back your hard drive or memory card contents from your memory card or PC to your clean hard drive or memory card.
10. Re-install your applications/themes.

PS. You do it at your own risk. I have bricked 1 phone and don´t want to risk this one (same fm than You are having btw)

That is so great. I have no idea what is the massstorage option is and I thought I have to purchase card reader to be able to copy all stuff from N73 phone memory and memory card.

I do not know that it require to formay memory card 😞
I guess, I need to first make sure that all default apps, contacts, images and settings are really in the backup.

1 question again  Do you know where is the location of "original SISX, Java, etc. installation files"?

Many thanks to your answer!

Noted that. I hope I can update the firmware successfully. If worst comes to worst, I will just bring to Nokia Care so they'll fix it 😊

Again, many thanks! I will post back of the result tomorrow or as soon as I finished doing the above steps.

Hi VinterKrig,
I succeed in copying all the files from the miniSD card to my PC. Thank you. However, Nokia Software Updater said the above version that I have is the lastest and there is no new firmware update for my phone. I am not sure why.

Thanks again for the help.
