Stop press: Nokia N95 in 'Battery not that bad' shocker!

Ok, some more test usage today (inc 2 hours train journey):
N70
- 10 mins browsing
- 32 mins talk time
- 4 sms
- 4 bars of charge left

N95
- 2.25 hours browsing
- no talk time
- 2 sms
- 2 bars of charge left

No other activity on both phones

I've been using the N95 for 3 weeks now, Batt only lasts until 2pm ish each day !

First 5 charges out of the box were full discharge/charge cycles, now back to normal routine of on charge all night but never switched off !

I have all services switched off other than gsm/3G (UTMS) for calls. make max 10 mins calls per day, 3 SMS !

loved my N91 for music but don't dare with my N95 as it just zaps Batt (using std 3.5mm jack H/Phones)

Have even tried setting backlight timers to lowest setting to save batt life !

Great phone for what it can do, if the batt lasts !

My fav accessory has become the Nokia CA-100 USB Charger !

have found a 1000mah batt, but thats only 50mah extra over std batt, is it worth it ?

I hadn't heard or read much about the battery life before I got my N95 (few days ago). I was a little disappointed the first couple of days, so today I charged it to "battery full" and started my normal routine. It's probably NOT anything close to most people's, but here goes.

At home I have my WiFi lan - so it's connected to that. Out and about, I use 3g ( UMTS/HSDPA).

I leave them (WiFi and 3G) on for several reasons - basically I have IM+ installed, so I can message on the move, and I have Roadsync installed, for push mail. I also use messaging for normal pop3 mail. As a busy consultant a great deal of my business is on the phone (with a Bluetooth headset), on IM's, on Mail, on SMS. Oh, and I have it connected to a SIP server as an extension off my IP PABX for "free" (other than bandwidth charges) calls... So switching off the battery guzzlers and doing without Internet (or doing it through GPRS) isn't really an option for me.

So probably a little heavier than your average user on the battery, huh? Anyway I'm averaging only about 5 to 8 hours between charges. And I'm very irked that why on God's green earth did they not enable USB charging?? At least when I have the blasted thing hooked up to the laptop (or I need to give it a quick half hour emergency charge when a power socket's not convenient) it could've nabbed itself a top-up.

Basically, I'm going to put a charger in the car, and maybe even buy a solar charger for the beast...

But for any *heavy* users like myself... believe me you're going to suffer with battery life.

Having said that, my HP iPaq was even worse, and don't even get me started on my laptop...

What you mustn't forget, if you use this thing for everything it's capable of, is you'll be doing things hardly even possible before - so making some sacrifices in terms of battery life inconvenience is going to be necessary.

I REALLY wouldn't have cared much if the thing had been a few mm thicker/heavier and they'd beefed up the battery to something much bigger... Other than battery life, this phone went even beyond my expectations, and I'd recommend it to any road warrior...

The only thing I'd criticise Nokia for on this one would be they made a killer phone, *capable* of all these amazing features, then basically nuked the ability to *use* them extensively by not paying closer attention to the battery...

Oh well... can't have everything.

Ciao!

Bob

I don't believe the battery life is bad. And It's definitely not as bad as critics have said! I've had mine for about a week and i've only charged it once, and even then the battery life had three bars left.

It depends on how much you use the phone. My E70 lasts just two days, while on others it lasts 5-6 days.

I too had problems with my N95, it only lasted 6 hours on standby.

I flashed it to the latest firmware and stopped using the case I bought when I bought he phone. I suspect the case was pressing one of the buttons and keeping the backlight on.

It's been fine ever since. The only big battery drainer since the upgrade is using the camera.

Upgrading the firmware will delete all your data by the way.

When using my N95 as a 3G modem I only get about 4 hours out of my battery... thats it.. batt dead! no talking.. no other stuff just 3G.. from full to flat in 4 hours. now.. why the hell didn't Nokia include Charging through the USB port? wouldn't that make sense? just one of my gripes with this phone.. I was so excited when I got it.. but now I am back using my old Sony W800i because it is so much nicer as a phone.. and my Nokia is only a modem. don't even get me started on why I dislike my New N95!
