GPS for 9290

I've asked this question in a couple of different forums and gotten a couple of different answers. Does the Nokia GPS work with the 9290?

I can't answer your question directly, but the following info may help...

If u buy the Nokia GPS in Europe, it comes bundled with TomTom City Maps and TomTom Route Planner for Europe. This, from personal experience works on both 9210 and 9210i. This does not include any maps for North America and I have never seen the Nokia GPS offered with maps for the USA/Canada over here.

If u can find a Nokia GPS bundled with maps for the USA, I would say it's a fair bet that it will work on the 9290 since that will have been put together as a specific package for the North American market - the 9210(i) is no use at all as a phone over there.

From everything I have seen in this forum about the 9290, I would be surprised if the European Nokia GPS didn't work on the 9290 although I can't immediately see much use for it without US maps. The data feed from the GPS to the 9210 is fairly simple and I would anticipate that it is in a standard format. There is at least one other GPS being developed for the 9210 and I have seen threads here from people making up adaptors to feed other GPS unit data into the 9210 - this would tend to support this theory.

I have tracked most of the GPS related threads in this forum and I can't recall any other discussion here of GPS / 9290.

I would have thought it should be possible to get an answer from Nokia - it's a question they should easily be able to answer.

I hope this helps - if you can get a definitive answer, please post in this forum.

I have the Tom Tom maps and route planner for the 9290 which became available about a month ago. If you look on the tom tom site it's all packaged together and they seem enabled for the GPS, they have the GPS option. I'm just wondering if it will plug in.

Richard,

I've wondered the same thing. I wanted a solution for the 9290 where I could enter a address and have the TOM TOM software take me their. But I was under the impression that the route planner for the US was more of a city to city guide. Is this true? Does it give you detailed info on address in each city? Does it have a "find address" feature?

If so.. maybe I need to experiment. 😊

thanks,

Hall

More street to street. there is a demo set on the tom tom web site and there are sets of free overlays that people have done for attractions and airports, that you can add to and with the gps it would get you very close to where you want to be. I've used it for directions from airports to hotels and to intersections and tested it against the "never lost" in rental cars and the directions are close.

I'm just trying to find out if the gps will plug into my 9290. I've asked the manufacturer and they say yes and nokia, the help line, says no.

Anyone have a clue?

I think so but i'm not sure. Anyway I thought of buying the 9290 and using it in europe because a tri-band is always usefull! Would it be a bad idea? Now i use a 9210i...

Richard,

For the sake of clarity, I assume when you refer to "Nokia GPS" you mean the Nokia GPS module LAM-1 ?

If yes, which "manufacturer" did you talk to? I thought it was made by Nokia?

I bought one of the first LAM-1 modules available in the UK in August 2002. On the box it says "compatible with all Nokia 9200 series communicators". I think this is a pretty good indication that it will work OK with the 9290 since that was released around then. It works on my 9210i which was released subsequently.
