The end call button...

I was wondering if it's possible to stop the phone completely closing an application when you press the end call button?

For example, I am in e-mail and would like to keep the application open so that it can periodically check for new e-mail. If I press the end call button (the red one), it closes messaging. I'd prefer if it kept messaging running and then returned me back to the standby screen.

The only way around this is to press and hold the menu button and then select standby from there, but this is long-winded...

Any ideas?

The quickest way to do this is to press the menu button / S60 key twice. The first press takes you to the application list the second takes you the idle screen (and subsequently will then cycle between these).
