Phone not recognised

I've installed Nokia PC suite 6.83.14.1.
It backs up my contacts, and file manager sees the phone and card contents quite happily. So that part is working well.
But when I go to the application installer, it says that 'the contents of the currently selected phone model cannot be shown by this application'; both on the phone and the card.
And Nokia Maploader refuses to recognise the presence of a card likewise. I see that it requires the phone to be in 'mass storage mode' - but no trace of what that is in the help screens. As I've said on another thread, I can't get maploader to download to a cardreader either (yes, I've used maps once, and the card has a directory structure on it, so it is ok)
Any ideas please?

Now, even though I have downloaded the maps directly to the card using a cardreader, the card is not seen through the usb cable and pc Suite, nor as I said the application installer.
Has anyone been successful using the application installer over usb?

I removed the memory card from my N95, inserted it into an SD adapter and plugged it straight into a HP PC with a card reader built in. I then used Maploader to directly copy to the card.

So I've no direct experience of the USB connection.

However, when you first connect your N95 to a PC you will be presented with various options on the N95 screen itself such as PC Suite, Windows Media, Mass Storage, etc. Hope that helps.

That was the key! Thanks, ffcphone

In Tools-Options-usb-usb mode, choose data transfer.
THEN maploader will work! it doesn't work in PC suite mode!

And it's not called 'mass storage mode'
