Mobizines

There is now a dedicated N95 version of the Mobizines client although you will need to email them to get hold of it. They require your mobile number and network to authorise you on their system.

Unfortunately, whereas the standard freely available Java client allows the user to select which access point to use (ie WiFi (free), GPRS (cost)) this dedicated version does not meaning you need to keep an eye on your data usage unless you're on an unlimited plan or have bought an add-on data bundle.

In addition, I've found the process of adding and removing individual magazine titles to the Mobizines client slow and sometimes error prone often requiring two or three attempts.

There's 60+ titles to choose from although it could be argued the content of each is fairly restrictive.

Hey FFCPhone -

Do you prefer the Java or the Symbian Client?

I have the Java client on my N95 and my colleague has the Symbian.
I Symbian is a bit more flashier (no pun intended) but I agree with you - updating over WLAN is so much nicer!

If you email them at [email protected] I'm sure they'll sort you out with the latest Java client if you're going off of the Symbian variant..

Good luck!

The Symbian variant is a little nicer although I found adding and removing Mobizine titles to be a pain. I'd select "Add" then navigate to the one I wanted, select it and it would appear in my list. However, sometimes a few minutes later, I'd get a message saying a fault had occured and it hadn't actually been added. And if you're adding a load in one go, that can be hugely annoying. Same thing happened on deleting Mobizine issues too. You'd select them for deletion, think it had been done and then be told, after a delay, some problem had arisen and they'd not been deleted.

But the real issue for me is the inability to choose WiFi as the access point. I have a cable internet connection at home with WiFi and, if Virgin Media are to be believed, it will soon be boosted to "up to 20mbps". This is massively quicker than any high speed T-Mobile internet service I get at the moment and, where possible, I'd prefer to use WiFi when at home.

The Symbian variant does not offer that choice although the Mobizines support staff tell me this is going to be addressed soon.

So for now, I've gone back to the Java client although, to be fair, the Mobizines issues available don't excite me much anyway. BBC News and Sport I can read via the BBC mobile/PDA site anyway. I've got past the stage of using something just because I can so I think Mobizines will be short lived on my N95. However, I strongly recommend all N95 users check it out. It's free (apart from data transit costs).

If you look for a good (and free 😉 Rss software for your phone, try

I gave Mobizines a whirl and very nice it looked too but unfortunately my phone kept wanting to connect every few minutes with it installed - and often did, downloading large amounts of data in the process.

Trial and error showed Mobizines was the problem and I didn't want it that badly to keep it really, uninstalled and the problem went away.
