Should I format or no?

I know we've discussed this in the past, but I just want to get things right! Since I want to format my 9210i (v 5.34 rae 5) in order to clean it i would like to know exactly what software i should download from the nokia site and how to format my 9210i. Is it an operation that I will manage to do by myself...It's the first time I do it and I don't wanna go to nokia tomorrow morning and leave my phone!!! 😃
Thanks a lot...The Godfather.

P.s. Do you recommend me to format it? Do you think it will make it better? Do you suggest me to format even my 64mb mmc? In the last period my 9210i has become a bit slower and it's quite packed with stuff. I even intalled/dis installed a lot of softwares...

Formatting has lots of pros and cons. Personally, I didnt want to format my device until it was necessary. There was a time when my MMC suddenly just got busted, so I had no choice but to reformat everything.
Now, I still experience some problems but with the device itself. It now makes me think if I didnt install some files the right way or something.
But, what I experienced after reformatting was my device was faster with bigger memory.
So.. I suggest, reformat only if you have no other choice. Thats only my opinion. 😃

You must keep in mind 2 things:

First do a backup of your device using the PC Suite.

Make shure you download all nokia sis files according to your RAE Version.
You have to download the AllNokiadata sis file and allMMCdata.

You can also format your MMC using file manager.

To format your device, just press CTRL Shift F when you restart your device and you see nokia shaking hands.

Gotta Go, good luck

I really don't know what to do...I'd like to try and see if it gets better, but I sometimes think I should take it to Nokia and let them figure it out...Even if I don't really trust them...They tend to be quite distract when they do these kinda things...

Formatting isn't that hard. And your Communicator will become faster without a doubt.
Just make sure you have a pcsuite handy and the 2 nokia sis files (1 for the device and the other for the mmc)

first backup your important files contact.db and calender.db (in my case)
And don't forget your sms service number (I allways do *g*) and internet settings.

After reboot and you see the white screen just press SHIFT_CTRL_CHR_F
You'll be guided through the format process.
After you see the hands again you must see a config screen to set up your date and stuff. If you don't see this screen after a while you'll have to format again.
Once you've configged your date settings you're ready to start reinstalling stuff.
The most important thing to install is all_nokia_data.sis this will install the vital things like filemanager onto c:

Now you have the option to install all_mmc_data.sis but you choose not to do this and just install the apps you want seperatly (will give you much more free memory).

Now just recopy your backupped files and you are done.

TIP: some files like contact.db and calender.db can't be copied because it will give the error "in use". What I do to prevent this: I go into filemanager, I choose backup to mmc, it will then state "closing all apps" when it does this you can copy or replace all the files. After copying just cancel the backup and of course delete all the files that already were backedup during the proces.

I'll give it a try 😃 ... I downloaded the all nokia 9210i it sis file, but I can't find the all nokia memory sis file! Any clue where to get it? By the way...just to know:I have everything in my memory and no app or no file in the 9210i...so I just format my 9210i and not the mmc and my data will be safe. Right?

Do you even get the format question? or does the key combination don't work? I had to try a few times to get it working on mine ...

I guess your phone decided for you 😃

I have had my 9210 for 1 years now and I have never formatted it. I have firmware 3.54 which was installed when I got it and I have never bothered to upgrade. My phone has worked fine all the time, never tilted or anything. Of course I probably have installed and uninstalled fewer applications than you guys but still I consider myself very lucky. I know the amount of problems many people have had. Of course the system would probably get faster if I did something to it, but in the PC world I have found that constant tweaking does not necessarily help you at all - never touch a system that works 😉

I format my 9210 all the time it cleans things up and makes it faster, its manly for the machines memory than the card. After formating the 9210 and re inserting the memory card all the apps installed on it still work.

I often copy my MMC with a card reader much faster than a backup then format then card and copy things back across.

As far a getting the format action to start, it can be a bit fussy about when youo press the buttons and hold them down, just try slightly different timeings when the hands appear.

I don't know guys,it just doesn't want to format!!! Are the keys correct? Should I press them together at the same time or one at a time? Help!!!! I want to format...
Laura, you are a lucky woman...never had problems with the 9210...you should keep it for ever!!! 😃 😃

press them at the same time, I usually hold down CTRL and SHIFT and the second the hands appear hold down the F if it dose not come up to the Fomat screen in a few seconds its not going to happen, so pop the battery out and try again.

anyway thats the way it works for me!

well after reading this .. i formated mine last night and guess what ..it seems as a new one .. i mean so fast and all ... i guess u should ... and yes it did take me few tries after which i could finally get it done .. try doing it on the white screen just before the hands ... i hold the shift and alt keps togather and then press the f key repeadly .. it worked ..and worked fine

Here is something not to sleep with...

I press the buttons to format mine, it asks me to confirm if I want to format and after a while, it shows me everything just the way i left it...

No format ! I did this 10 times. It does exactly the same!

Well, I got the answer myself, as I spent the last 4 hours trying to format my 9210 without any response...

I uninstalled all the programs from the Nokia before formating. After I uninstalled and tried to format it again, it was a major success! I'm gonna party!

What everyone said is true. After 8 months of hard working with my 9210, it was very slow and buggy. Now everything runs smoothly again. Not to mention that when I first bought 9210, I installed and uninstalled tenths of stupid programs that left lots of rubbish files into the communicator! I have not upgraded it yet, but I doubt if I will see a big change. What do you think ?

don't think you'll see any big differences with firmware upgrades, only when a update fixes a problem that you were experiencing 😉

The problem with your format seemd to be a program that was running that prevented your fotmat. I've heard that a boot with the delete all ini files keypress fixes this 2. Never tried it though 😃

I don't understand but I've formatted my 9210i last week and since then I'm losing some ram! At re-boots after format I was over 4300...now I'm at 3900...and after using few apps it goes down to 2900!!!
Btw...doesn't the 9210i have 8mb ram? Whare does that end up since I've always saw not more than 4300 mb's of free ram after re-boot???!!!

I install a font file, then reboot the system, the white screen comes then a black one then the white then black ..etc. how can i format it.

Wirelessly posted (Nokia6600/1.0 (3.42.1) SymbianOS/7.0s Series60/2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.0)

NEVER i said never INSTALL all nokia and all memory card sis files. Install only the individual sis files that you need. This will impove the performance of your 92xx. So : never INSTALL all data sis files. Prefer the individual sis files 😉 . You will have 47 % free ram memory always 😉 cheers

If I look at the list here http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/support/nokia92x0/guide2.php#2.2 which gives the list of files in the All_Nokia_9210_dat.SIS all those actually seem like necessary, don't they? What could I leave out then? The help-file?

All_memory_card_data.SIS seems to include the fax and mover etc. that I could live without, but that would mean I should format the MMC instead of the device, right?

But then when I look at the CD that came with the device (years ago 😉 ) there are folders such as 'Communicator Applications', 'Preinstalled in Device' and 'Preinstalled in Memory Card'. Some files seem overlapping, for instance Applications-folder has a file MS_Office.SIS while MemoryCard-folder has a file Word.SIS. Are the files in Applications-folder add-ons or what? If I install separate SIS-files, which ones do I need.

AARGh, this is all so very confusing... 😃

Hi there!
I also want to format my nokia 9210i, but it does not work :frown: . I think it has something to do with the firmware version you have. I have the oldest one that is available I guess (v 05.33 10-04-02 RAE-5). You can get the firmware by typing in *#0000# on the phone.
Maybe the format function does not work with this firmware. I'll have the soft updated by a Nokia dealer in my region...
