I recently contacted tmobile asking if i could use my phone as a modem to use the internet on my laptop, i wasnt convinced they know you are using it as a modem unless you go over your usage limit. this is the reply email i received:

Thanks for your email letting me know you're interested in joining T-Mobile on Flext 35 + Web'n'Walk.
It's great to hear you're planning on signing up. I realise there are a few things you'd like to check before committing to a monthly contract, and I'm pleased you've emailed me.
The standard Web'n'Walk option gives you unlimited usage up to 1GB of data per month. We have systems in place which monitor your account to ensure you aren't exceeding the fair use data allowance, and to ensure you're only using the service for browsing from your phone.
I'm afraid I'm not authorised to give you any specific information about the systems or processes we use to do this. Many customer's try to use their phone as a modem on the standard Web'n'Walk plan, and find that their data transfer speed is dramatically reduced due to the network protection controls which are applied to the account when our fair use policy is abused in this way.
These network protection controls would remain in place, making the internet connection pretty much unusable until you upgrade your price plan to one that allows you to use your phone as a modem. If you want to use your phone as a modem, you'll need Web'n'Walk Plus or Web'n'Walk Max with your Flext plan.
