I'm interested in buying a N95 but concerned about the VOIP crippling. If it's from Vodafone or Orange but the operator has unlocked the phone to all networks, does that 'heal the cripple', is an operation required (firmware?) or is the affliction terminal?
If you know, you know - if you're guessing, please, you don't really know.
If its supplied and branded Vodafone or Orange it will have their custom firmware on and therefore a VoIP cripple - it will need a firmware op to make it whole again

Thanks for the quick reply.
I don't suppose the firmware or an upgrade are available?
I am curious though, if/when it is, can one install standard firmware on a handset that has orange/vodafone branded versions?
from www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk you can buy Vodafone contract phones that are SIM free
I was weeding out the scam artists on a well known auction site to buy for around 350 not the 500 stores are charging.
Anyway, I think you are advertising.
No advertising, please - just information.
I'm not advertising. I just bought a N95 was informing that I discovered that the shop that I provided a URL for sent me SIM free with a Vodafone contract. See my other posts - been here for years! 😉
I wasn't sure. I was talking a bit tongue in cheek. Anyway, I don't want a contract.
Thanks for your suggestion! [sincere]

Nokia Softwar Update (NSU) does not currently support the N95. I expect it will do in a month or so, but even then it will only update the branded (e.g. Orange/Vodafone) firmware that's already in your handset. There is a program called NSS that allows you to change the Product Code in any N-series phone to an unbranded code (you must use a code forr the same model!), then NSU will be fooled into installing generic/debranded FW for you. (see my comments below re warranty).

Yes, you can de-brand the firmware in your N95 - see my post at http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/58684/
However, be warned it's not an official method and some forum users believe debranding your firmware yourself may invalidate your warranty. Your choice.
(I have de-branded all my previous Nokia BB5 handsets - 6680, N70, N80, N73 and N95) and never experienced a problem, but I have read posts from forum users who have bricked their phoned if something foes wrong during the de-branding process).
