N95 & Streaming Media

Hi,

Is it possible to stream media from PC and view/listen on the N95? I have a wireless media adapter downstairs attached to my hifi (Phillips Streamium SLA5520) which does this and was hoping the N95 was capable with its uPnP and wifi?

I cannot seem to find any function on the phone to find such a feature?

Any help appreciated,

Cheers

Darran

One of the biggest let downs for me it the lack of streaming abilities. Yes it has uPnP, but its crippled. In fact it's a very weird implementation of uPnP indeed. Unlike the vast majority of UPNP devices now on the market, you have to copy the files across before you can play them. All a bit rubbish really, such a wasted opportunity. And this being Symbian, which is increasingly pathetic compared to where Windows Mobile is at right now, dont expect to find any decent third party software that can do it either.

Install both this

and this

Installed works as described .. will have more of a play setting up a shoutcast server on the PC. But yeah 😊

Ok had a play with creating my own stream.

Its a 2 step process - use the PC to open up a stream - save playlist as playlist.pls ... put it in a \Shoutcast directory - I put mine on the card.
when you go to select radio station your new stream should be down the bottom .. ie use the up arrow it'll jump straight there.

Good luck! 😊

BTW back in the day there was a free Real Media server - probably still is .. might try that out since it supports video too. 😃

Shoutcast works nice .. with Internet Radio

Streaming like that is ok, but very limiting. uPNP would allow you to actually navigate/play your music/album/playlist collection seamlessly as if the files were local to the device.

Have you tried ORB? I find it works great for streaming audio from your PC to your phone. If set up correctly it will work as uPnP on your wireless lan and you just use the browser to navigate your music folders. Sound quality is good and I had no buffering during playback. It will stream video as well, but you need a decent PC and mines not up to the task.

I have tried orb and found the music ok but when i tried to watch any videos the quality was really poor, very blockey like a 3gp clip.

pictures also when transfered was not very clear also.

WOW WOW and WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey cheers guys, loaded ORB and absolutly blown away!!! I can stream my files at work or anywhere.. what a bit of kit!!!!

I can get the phone to play streamed music files but I can't get it play as uPnP device as such. Via gallery and Home Network I can browse folders on my PC but I can't play through the phone, it will let me remote control my Phillips Streamium SLA5520 uPnP media player which is a bonus but not exactly what I wanted. Could y please let me know how I can "set up correctly" to play uPnP streaming with N95?

Thanks for help thus far.... I am gob smacked at the capabilities of this device!!! (even if it is a bit buggy and restarts sometimes?)

Cheers

The N95 does not currently support this. It will only work as a UPnP remote / browser. So, short answer is, it sounds like you have it correctly set up.

chrsfrwll,

Marke seems to be running it in this mode according to his earlier post???

Hope so as the orb streaming mode is a not that slick especially for when at home compaired to my Phillips Streamium device...

Sorry my mistake. I misread. I was referring to the standard N95 UpnP abilities. I have no experience of Orb, though from what I understand of it, it isn't UPnP but rather a means to stream via the internet. So, if your PC is on, your N95 will access Orb via the internet back to your PC and then back via the internet to your N95. Sounds a bit longwinded to me.

Hi. If you choose 'Use UPnP for Direct Stream' on orb's configuration, it will stream direct to your phone an not via orb's internet servers. I can see this is true from the activity lights on my router, together with good quality streaming on the handset.

You need to change your Orb settings to transmit video in RealMedia format instead of 3GP

Thanks for that. I didn't realise it could do that. I might revisit it now.

Nope, still can't get this to work via upnp. Although I can navigate the folders on my laptop, when I select a track to play, al that happens is it says "Select a device: (empty)". If I have Simple Centre running, it will show that as an available device but all that happens when that is selected is that the music plays on the laptop. 😛cguru:

I can stream music and photos from my N95 to my showcentre 200. Video won't work though since the showcentre can't handle MP4 video but AVI files stored on the N95 also works.
