By installing a 3rd party app, is their any way to get free GPS with voice navigation? Hopefully a free app, but I wouldnt mind paying a small amount if it meant no subscription costs.
I dont care about data usage, as I have unlimited plan.
Any suggestions?
its odd this has come up - i've been using maps on the n95 and its allowed me to download the voice guidance without any cost?

same here , im with o2 they told me once its downloaded you caan use it all the time
I wish I had joined T-Mobiles for it's web and walk 😞 On orange it's like £1 per Meg, it's total rubbish.
Has anyone been charged for the Voice Guidance?
A compatible release of TomTom is inevitable, patience :P
You can use voice navigation free on O2?
Not for me. I can download the voices for free (through Wi_Fi) but if I want to actually use the voice navigation, I have to cough up the dosh

Same for me, can this be bypassed?
you can use the voices for simulation as they are free to download, but if you want to use the voices on the navigation, you have to buy the navigation before you use them on it

I'm also with o2... and the phone has just told me that I will need to pay for voice assistance! Garmin here we come.😉
I'm amazed no-one has mentioned the free navigation software before (especially before I bought Garmin :redface😊
I've had a quick look and I'm not too keen on the interface of nav4all
I like the look of amazegps, but you need a constant data connection which I'm not worried about with data usage as its inclusive, but I can see a problem if I drive out of signal area.
we-travel looks really interesting as it uses open source maps which you can update yourself. For me they're more up-to-date than any commercial satnav that I've seen, but it's pretty much alpha, but shows loads of promise.
All-in-all none of these are as good as Garmin, but they are free and could become just as good and I would have tried them for a while before paying for a solution.
Would be good if anyone fancies doing a more extensive review :top:
I dont see any GPS programs that relies on a data connection viable. Apart from the need of a dataplan, if your out of signal its immiediatly useless.
Not that you lose signal much, but chances are you need GPS is in an emergency, and then its all pointless if you cant use it.
I might try we-travel later, but Im dubious of it so far.
I must say Ive had only the opposite expirence with open source maps.
Edit: Actually no I wont, there isnt any UK maps (just London).

I'd hardly say this is getting mature.
It seems to be the very first alpha release, it doesn't have any UK mapping other than London and according to the website it doesn't yet support the internal GPS.
Might be a runner in the future but there's clearly a long way to go at the moment.
Wombler
everyone has forgotten Google Maps that can do navigation as well through the internet connection. (well, at least this is iphones solution until something actually comes out for it properly).
The smarter alternative action may be (given I dont know how much you pay) to go for a lesser phone plan and use the savings of that towards Garmin, Copilot, R66 or Sygic. Bartmanekul has got some reviews of them and there should be something for less than 50 quid somewhere along the line..
