GPS Landmarks without Internet

16 replies · 5,891 views · Started 27 April 2007

I've searched through this forum and cannot find the answer even though someone else said it's been repeated here a million times already....

is it possible to preload landmarks into the n95 to be used at a later date with using the internet connection. Whenever I am travelling about and use the search function for say an example "Schools" the results come back as nothing found because I have no internet connection, only WiFi. Search function works great at home with the wifi connection...

please help....thanks!!! 🙄

I dont think you can. You can preload the maps, but extra stuff like that needs to be downloaded i believe.

this is not true because I have used nokia's maploader and installed all the maps I need. Whenever I use the search function and do not have an internet connection, the results of the search always come back as "nothing found"
😡

tools / Landmarks .. assuming you've loaded them previously you can select the desired one .. options / show on map .. it ought to show .. it may complain about no internet connection but then you knew that 😊

how can I "load them previously" ???

if I am out and about town and need to do a search, if I do not have an internet connection, the results always come back empty ...

other software such as TomTom load up all the POI's or Landmarks onto your memory card without needing an internet connection....

I'm not sure how or why you can't do this or what the setting requirement is, because I've just looked on mine and I can search for landmarks (just checked ATMs) without an internet connection.

How about changing your settings Network > Use Network > Never. This might force it to not try the internet and rely upon the memory card instead.

weird, i just did that and still nothing found !

Network > Use Network > Never, then I searched for ATM's, nothing found !!!!

frustrating....😡

I would suggest a re-install of maps onto your memory card from the Maploader program, as the next possible option. Might be a waste of 30 mins, but you never know.

OT:

Maploader is way too slow.

I dont know why, tried downloading Philipinnes Map, 1.3MB and it took me 2 hours to finish.

Anyone experienced this?

I just redownloaded using maploader once again, unfortunately, same results...

so you are telling me that you could be driving about using your N95, you could do a search for "attractions" without enabling the network connection, and it will display a list of attractions ? there is no way mine will do that, it always reports back "nothing found" !!!

anyone else have it working like this ?😡 😡 😡

hi.

I have the exactly same problem as you describe Monica.
I downloaded the swedish map apr. 80 Mb all together. I did this twice to a memorycard in my cardreader on the laptop.
The I removed the wifi connection option in Maps on my n95. Then I make a search through categories for restaurants as an example I get "nothing found"... Then I enable the wifi-usage and do the exact same search through categories, and this time I get them all.
I think half of the categories visable in the "show" list are downloaded. The rest of them to show I have to have an internet-connection. Is this how its supposed to be?
Could you guys try this out.

For example Parkings in categories I get them all without having an internetconnection.

Many of the icons do not even appear on the map WITH the internet connection. Is this wrong?

plz help

I've also got this problem after all. Some of the "search by Categories" options need to have a connection to find them. When I tried "attratctions" it couldn't find any offline BUT it couldn't find any online either. So is it a distance thing as well? That said, I could find other stuff, all local, offline, so not sure of the logic yet.

here is what I did

formatted the microSD card on the phone. Then I updated the firmware.
the I started the Map application with network option ON.
then I loaded som maps by scrolling over my city. Now I could see all the icons, even the restaurants. And when searching by categories it will find it all.

I do not know where the problem was before. Now I will try to save the maps on the microSD from maploader program also.

I think its faster displaying the maps .. and the GPS is much better.😊

hmmm, are you going to have to do that for all different cities ? meaning scrolling over the city....basically, you are going to need an internet connection if you are out away from home....still not happy ! TomTom is FAR superior, too bad it won't work with the internal gps of the N95 and from what I have been reading on the net, it probably never will, Nokia won't allow it....all about the $$$$
