I had a Vodafone-UK N95 and I wanted a generic euro f/w for VoIP reasons, so I decided to upgrade and it went a bit wrong for a while, here's what happened:
Firstly I backed up using the PC Suite, and I used NSS to change the product code. Then I upgraded using the NSU, so far so good. All appeared to be well. I restored from my backup, things started to get messy, icons disappeared. Finally the phone crashed and upon restarting it came up with 'Phone start-up failed. Please contact retailer.'
Amused I was not. Anyway after some searching I discovered something similar that had happened on another Nokia phone. The solution was a hard reset (green call button and 3 and * held down together) which I had to do very quickly before the failed message came up. This resets the phone. This time I restored from the backup and unticked the settings and so far so good 😊
I can only assume my backup referenced a Vodafone theme that was built into the Vodafone f/w and is not in the generic f/w which made it panic and die.
Just thought I'd post this in case someone experiences a similar event.
All's well that ends well 😊 (and Ive got VoIP working :icon14: )
I had a similar (if not quite so scary experience) doing the above but with an Orange N95. I had the phone backed up to the memory card and reflashed after setting the phone to Euro1 and using NSU. After a successful update I duly restored the backup only to find that my new and exciting Internet Tel. etc apps / settings had disappeaed. No major problem, restored the phone back to factory settings, copied everything back on manually and now alls good. (No hard reset required).

Unfortunately users of every N-Series Nokia handset have discovered to their cost that the backup/restore app. causes more hard than good after a FW upgrade. The fact thet you changed from Vodafone branded FW to Generic FW compounds the potential for problems.
Best practice is to Synchronise with Nokia PC Suite, then apply the FW upgrade (Generic or branded), format the handset with *#7370# and finally re-sync with PC Suite. You may also have to re-install some apps that have been lost in the process - either because they were stored in the phone's internal memory or because they were not digitally signed by a trusted certificate authority.
Hope this helps to explain why you experienced problems and avoid them next FW upgrade.
