help needed using ORB on n95

i need some help regarding the optimum settings on my n95 on t-mobile.

when i try to play video files from orb they are all stuttery and not very clear. i have changed the straem format to real player but its still not that good.

is it a settings problem or a network problem? i also find it keeps stoping for buffering which is really anoying.

please help

whats your upstream bandwidth ? 😊

where do i look to see what it is?

That's to do with your broadband provider. Probably in the region of 256k but you could try this link to test -> Here

Thanks for that link.

if i have understood it right my download is 2892 and my upload is 287kbs

dont know if this is good or bad?

what next?

Sounds about average. Mines 2793 and 368 but it can vary depending on other people's usage at certain times of day. It all depends how far away you are from the exchange and what your provider has given you. Unfortunately very few people have true synchronous speeds. (Something I used to dream of for hosting Halo/Ghost recon games 😉 )

Anyway, back to your problem. What sort of videos are you trying to watch and where are they located? What size are they and how are they encoded?

i think they are avi files that i have downloaded from p2p networks. typical file size is around 700mb. they are just stored in my movies on my computer.

What i liked about this method was that i didnt have to convert any of my video files to mp4 and but them on my phones memory card and thus take up loads of memory space.

streaming quality is poor though and keeps stopping for buffering.

Have tried to speak with t-mobile about it and they reckon its because i am not in a 3g area and that normal gsm signal can only handle a maximum of 56kb.

when i do a speed test on orb i am getting around the 50kb mark. The t-mobile technition reckons i need around 256+ to get good streaming

dont know if this is right or not

Ah, now I understand the problem. It's not a home broadband issue. If you don't have a 3G signal, video streaming will be bad. The GSM network won't be enough to give you quality streaming, so no amount of tinkering with Orb will sort that out.

thats what i had come to understand now.

funny thing is though that i went shopping the other day and found that i then had a 3g signal so i gave it a go.

on the speed test it came back at 625kbs so i thought great i should now have quality streaming but alas no. i just kept getting a message back saying not enough bandwidth check network settings.

whats that all about?

Which WebNWalk option are you on? The basic package (7.50 per month) doesn't allow video or audio streaming. If that's the one you are on you might find that T-Mob have now started monitoring and controlling bandwidth use.

Mind you, I hope that's not the case. I just signed up to WebNWalk basic this afternoon!

By the way, does the problem go away if you stream over WiFi? If not then bandwidth might not be the only problem.

I am on the basic web and walk package but i have heard reports from other users that htey have been able to do it fine?

not tried it via wifi, dont know how to
