File transfer N95 -> N95 (Howto??)

19 replies · 5,135 views · Started 03 May 2007

Hi

Is there any FTP server/clients (or similar products) to do filetransfer between to N95:s?
(and we are talking about over the radio network, not Bluetooth, wifi, cables etc etc.)
And i don't want to send MMS, i want to send large files, around 20MB.

So anyone have any suggestions?

What 'radio network' are you referring to? Bluetooth is a radio transmission but you say not wifi, bluetooth or cable. What other ways are there?

Transferring is easy via bluetooth or infrared, especially if you use y-browser but it sounds like you are overcomplicating this a lot

Er ... there is one OTHER radio.
GSM ?

MobyExplorer does FTP, it says it supports Nokia but I've not downloaded the trial to check if it means S60 3rd edition.

EDIT: Just tested it and it works fine accessing FTP servers, make sure you download the unsigned version, the signed one crapped out with java errors. All in all a nice little application, suppose if you really need FTP access on your phone it's well worth the $15 registration fee.

I don't think Bluetooth will work when my N95 is in London and the other mobile is in New york.

And YES i'm talking about the Radio network, GSM,DCS,UMTS.
And NO Bluetooth is NOT a radio "network" it's simply a point to multipoint radio interface.

I've tried mobyexplorer now , and its a nifty little program indeed , but i doesnt seem to do ftp transfer between 2 mobiles, anyone have any ideas?

Yeah FTP the file to a server and let the other mobile download it via FTP from there.

I don't see why you're making the whole process so hard, the N95's come with USB cables, copy the file to a computer, FTP it from there and let the person at the other end download it and copy it to the phone.

Yeah that would be an option of course...will work.

BUT, i have to disagree to the "making the whole process hard"
Sharing a 20MB file directly between 2 mobiles is wastly (in theory) less hard than
using cables,computers and external FTP:s ....😉

But it's taken you a day to get this far and you still have no phone to phone solution. If both parties are clued up about FTP then they should be able to use a data cable.

Should be a 10 minute job, sounds easier to me!

Nice attitude fuckwad 😡

Yeah but thats not a problem, the time is not important and this is a discussion forum, so thats all i want to do, discuss this matter with the rest of you, hear if someone knows anything about this matter.

You have already given me a practical suggestion on how to manage filetransfer between 2 phones and thats good for now, BUT it's still interesting to discuss if we can dig deeper in this matter, like i said......

Mission 1:
2 N95 phones
one in New york
one in London
transfer 20MB without any external FTP,Computers, bluetooth, cables etc etc

any suggestions are welcome.

Did you have a look at SymSMB?
For this application this task is piece of cake, just a perfect match for your "Mission N1".
For an example over GPRS (as long as "time is not important"😉 for NewYork-London "without any external FTP,Computers, bluetooth, cables etc etc"

Just for fun we can even try it FOR REAL! I would not promise New-York, but some place in North America for sure!
And not 20 mb, as it too boring, but just for this post message.

Also can be used for some useful stuff as well with Wi-Fi, WinMAX, BlueTooth ets..

P.S. 3 day latter: Let me know when you are ready.

you could do it via email as suggested, that would be probably the easiest way so long as the mail servers both support attachments of that size (some don't). An alternative is to use IM+ by shapeservices. It's an instant chat prog that supports icq, msn, and so on, but has a file transfer function built in. So you could both log on at an arranged time and just transfer. I don't know for sure if there are any limitations regarding file size but i have sent a file of a couple of about 2 meg with no probs.

Can the N95 really send to an ftp?
That is fantastic, I use FTP all the time for work. that's the best way to transfer files. You don't need to worry about connection drop outs etc... just send to the server and the other party can get it afterwards.

That's how we send our magazines to print!! lol

discs, mail and litho printer's salesmen are a thing of the past!!

I'm also very interested in a solution for this. How to send a 10MB video file produced on the phone from one S60 v3 phone directly to another. WiFi is fine for me, so I'm guessing the only real solution is to use email as the intermediary. Any other ideas? Thanks!

^^^ I have answer for you, all same. Magic word is in post #15, just using Wi-Fi instead of GPRS in your case.
