Fring & Windows Live Messenger ??

Hi all, just installed Fring so I can use it for Messenger and it seems to be logged on and the contacts are updated as and when they log in, couple of questions though, does this mean it is constantly connected to the web? Also I have chosen the chat option against someone who is showing as logged in but they don't get the message?

Any ideas?

Sorted the message bit, it now works, just need to know if it's connected all day? Surely that could cost a fortune if you don't have an inclusive data package?

I used to use PDA phones with pocket pc and windows mobile, on O2 basic tariffs. They charge fortunes for data.

Anyway, although you're connected, you only pay for the transfer of data. I don't think being connected all day would cost loads unless you're chatting alot on it.

Someone please oppose or confirm this???

If you can see the GPRS logo just below the signal strength meter, (looks like 2 parallel horizontal lines) then you are connnected to GPRS or 3G Data and are liable to network charges.

If you can see the Wi-Fi logo on the top-right of the screen, then you will not be liable to network charges but (a) will discharge the battery quickly and (b) may be liable to charges if you are in a Wi-Fi hot-spot.

What you could do is set Fring NOT to auto-start (in the options -> settings menu within Fring). The downside is you would not be able to reveive VOIP calls via fring unless you manually launched the Fring app.

TBH I had to remove it as it was draining my battery at high speed, a full charge was down to 2 bars in around 4 hours!

To save starting a new thread, I have another Fring Question - not meaning to hijack.

After the firmware update I had to reinstall Fring. Once installed it aksed me to choose a user name and password. Thing is, I already had one from the first installation.

Anyway, I tired entering the user name and password from last time and it kept saying registration failed. Eventually after trying loads of times it with two different password (I'd forgotten which of the two I'd used the first time) it let me into the app.

So, my question is, have I now created a new account? Alos, how do I get back to the place when I can choose the Fring password so I can change it - once into the app there doesn't appear to be anywhere to change it.

It also took me ages to find where to put my msn password in - I just kept trying the same thing until it worked - i.e go the page where you tick the services you want and select MSN.

It's odd becuase before the firmware I seemed to be able to get round the program with no problems! 😊

BTW, spendleb, why did you remove Fring? Why don't you keep it on the system and only log on when you want to use it?

I installed Fring aswell and on my E61 it works flawlessly but on my N70 it always tells me that it can't find a good access point and then it start testing the connection
that fails aswell and I can only close the app afterwards.

Some ideas?

For me, Fring is a great peace of software. All work well, and connect all conts at same time. Just great.

Fring will be using your network connection even if you are just logged in. It wont be using much, but it has to keep the connection alive. I would imagine the client side will do this rather Frings gateways.

I also think Fring is supurg. I have MSN, Skype and SIP all setup on it and they all work wonderfully on my N95.
