Hi all!
I'm considering taking the plunge and getting the N95 (I currently have the N80) but have read varying reports on the web, and have just seen this video review.
I'd post the link but I'm not allowed yet it seems, but if you google "channel five" and "gadget show" and click on the "video" section, once you've found their page, at the top you should find the review. If anyone else could post the link, it'd be useful.
What does everyone think? Is this a fair summing up or are all those GPS and camera issues described exaggerated?
Possibly suffering a bit from exaggeration and a bit from not updating his firmware.
I'm on the latest firmware and I just tried taking a photo to make sure I wasn't going mad: in 5 megapixel mode, focusing first (as you should do to test 'shutter lag'😉 the photo was recorded in - I would guess - about 1/8 of a second delay. Absolutely acceptable and better than every other cameraphone I've tried. Better than some cheap digital cameras.
Now if he was just pointing at something, pressing the shutter fully and timing how long it took to re-read back the recorded image and *display it*, on the original firmware, then yes - it would be a few seconds. But in my opinion this has been fixed more than satisfactorily now.
Plus he grumbles that Orange haven't 'rolled out' HSPDA yet - that shouldn't be part of a review of the phone, should it? (Anyway he's silly for not being on T-mobile Web 'n' Walk - I get well over 1Mbit a lot of the time.)
To be fair though - the GPS does seem quite poo 😊
AND while I'm on a roll: he says 'you could have to send the phone back to get it updated'. Hmm. ..from what I've seen the Nokia updating software does a great job of being useable by almost anyone.
I thought it was about right, and he said nothing new to just about all users of the phone.
I too was initially disapointed with everything he said about but soon fell in love with it, and feedback on this forum shows that the firmware is being improved.
So in all I would say (as usual) the gadget show did a good review.
Thanks. That's very helpful and I was thinking of going with T-Mobile anyhow.
Although I have to say I will always be wary of NSU, since (completely) bricking my N80 previously!
I hate the gadget show. They focus on all the wrong things and don't seem to have any background in the field of most gadgets they review.
