When is the phone actually using Edge?

When I launch the Podcasting application and it does nothing the E symbol is still showing. Let me take that back I start to download an episode and then the E symbol appears... that's expected.

Does the Podcasting keep open a GPRS connection even if it's not actually be used for anything?

for instance I go to download an episode. I stop the downloading but the E symbol still displays.

does that mean there's still an open GPRS connection that my provider is charging me for?

The only way the E symbol goes away is when I've quit the podcasting application.

When you use an (any) application that connects to the internet the phone keeps the connection as long as you have the application open.
However, as long as your not downloading anything it doesn't matter since a GPRS\EDGE\3G connection is not charged by connection time/duration but per kb data downloaded. Follow?

So even though my provider sells packages based on time ie. 100 hours per month for x dollars. It's only charging "time" when I'm transferring data and it's not measuring how long a connection is left open?

Yes your'e correct I conducted an experiment and left it with E showing but not doing anything and it didn't affect my remaining balance.

So the next question is ... how do you know the difference b/w standby and active from looking at the indicator? It doesn't appear to be possible to tell when you're truely being charged.

If you have tested it you should be fine. However, I was suprised to hear that your'e provider has a dataconnection package that is based on connected h/month instead of Xkb/month (..never heared of that one before when it comes to transfer of data). So in order to be sure maybe you should contact your provider to verify you're conclusion. It sounds very strange to base invoicing of packet switched connection on connection duration/time instead of the amount of data that is transferred.

You can't by looking at the indicator. You can of corse hold track of the total amount of data transferred (and time) by looking in the log application (..Menu => Log => Datap...).
